Competition

Hello all! My name is: Angela. My boss introduced my to this website yesterday. My response, (jokingly) was, what you want me to become a professional cook! He replied, "No, because then I would have competition." I then said to him, with a little chuckle in my voice, (what, are you afraid of being beat by a woman)? He said, "No, I will not be beat by a woman." Ooh, I said to him, your quite confident in yourself aren't you! He said, "When it comes to my cooking, yes." Now, just a little background, he's totally self taught, (as am I, I learn as I go and I love to experiment) but, I have only ever cooked for family, friends and people whom I take care of. He on the other hand, often gets hired to cook for business constituents etc. So, I am up against some real competition. I have had some of his cooking and most of it is quite good, some however, not quite to my liking, but that don't make it bad, just diffent taste.

Question: What's quick, easy, super delicious and NO FAIL? Or am I expecting too much in the real cooking world? Lol

It may be hard to check every box on your list of requirements, but I'm sure a good game plan can be assembled nonetheless, although it seems your boss may have access to the playbook if he reads this.

It'd be useful to know a little more about what kind of food you have experience in making, and what you think your strengths are. What are some things you've made that family and friends really enjoyed? Any cooking techniques (braise, bake, sous vide, etc.) that you feel confident in? How's your sauce game?

If you want quick, easy and delicious, you're probably going to need some high quality ingredients to make shine. Fresh seasonal produce, high quality meat or seafood, a generations-old dough starter. Those sorts of things. What do you have access to?

Also, what are the logistics of this competition? Do you have to take something into work or are you making food in a kitchen a la minute? How many people do you need to serve and who's judging this thing?

More info pls! In the mean time, start talking as much smack as possible around the work place. Maybe suggest that he doesn't have the stones to attempt a risotto or souffle. Try to get in his head and force an error.

Welcome Angela! Chef Steps (and these forums) is a good place to start honing your skill set. As for your question on what is NO FAIL, a nice green salad comes to mind. After that, well, as they say...nuttin' honey. While we have a goodly amount of professional chefs and culinary schooled folk here, there are probably more home cooks that outnumber them. Always and forever on the learning curve, something new every day. As the others have asked, what are your skill sets? With what type of cuisine are you comfortable? I ask because I know I can bake with ease and Italian food is my 'go to', easy and fresh and fabulous. On the other hand ask me to cook something Asian and I'm like a deer in the headlights (although I've been practicing and getting a little stronger). That's the kind of thing we will need to know to help you move forward. That being said, again, welcome and have fun!!
