Don't do it.. bad juju no bueno. Just use hot tap water to help it get to temp faster. Joule will thank you 😊

You could heat up water in a pot or what have you, separately, but you can seriously damage the unit if you have your joule in the pot while you're heating the water. From time to time, I need to replenish the water in my bath, and will heat out on the stove, you just add it to the joule after the fact

pd and brian said it and I'll third it...no. Joule is pretty darn efficient and fast heating up water. If you're doing a large cook (using a cooler or very large lexan) you can heat up the water and pour it into the container then add Joule. But NEVER heat up water with Joule in the vessel. I think pd said it best...."bad juju no bueno"!!

I do this frequently. just ensure Joule is suspended using the clip and don't set on bottom of pot.

Ha. That made me chuckle. Don't do it! Don't do it! Don't do it! I do it all the time

other than not having the bottom in contact with the element, I can't figure out why it would damage it (assuming one doesn't leave it on high and in contact with the base)

Now that I own a Joule I don't need to do this anymore like I did with my old Anova

Wouldn't Joule being attached to the pan cause the pot to transfer heat directly to the plastic parts of the unit? While I'm guessing the water consumes most of the heat energy, it still seems risky. I'd imagine the plastic could melt.
