Sugar straws

I am wondering if I can make straw out of sugar or isomalt? Wanting to make it for a fun lemondrop cocktail in my restaurant. I understand with the moisture in the drink that it can melt and dissolve but at least for the first 2 minutes or so.

I bet you could candy coat an existing straw and make that work. Or maybe try some small plastic tubing placed inside of a larger piece of plastic tubing and filling the void with candy.

Castor sugar held in a small amount of water does get quite hard, it'd certainly stay a minute or so.

Oh I guess I read it as more of a procedural question as opposed to a recipe question. I have no, nada, zilch experience with candy and pastry so I defer to the pros on that one.

@Dustin I would try something like the following. Fill a straw with a molten food grade fat or wax like cocoa butter or beeswax, which would probably be easier to work with. Then chill it to harden the fat and use a razor to cut the straw open and peel it away. Then roll the straw in isomalt or sugar. Now for the tricky part, you need to dip it into a very saturated solution of isomalt syrup or sugar, then pull it out and let it drip dry. Wait for the syrup to crystallize and harden. Repeat to build up the shell. Once it's thick enough, you can warm the cylinders to melt the fat or wax and drain it out.

This will probably take a lot of experimentation to get just right.
