Shrimp paste substitute

Heya gang. I'm looking to dive into Thai cooking, but know shrimp paste is a staple ingredient. I'm allergic to shellfish, which makes this slightly problematic. Has anyone had any luck approximating the flavour with something else?

Do you trust Fish Sauce? Not sure if it gets mixed up with shellfish but that be my first place to start subbing and then maybe add some bonito flakes to mess around with the texture. Which dish are you trying to make.

For most Thai recipes you can leave it out, there will be very little difference.
