Hello everyone

I have to admit, I’ve been a lurker for quite a while without introducing myself!

I’m Tom from the UK. Having worked in some pretty good restaurants as front of house I’ve seen a lot of good cooking done. When my pregnant wife wanted to be able to safely eat a rare steak, I was aware that things could be done to make this safer and this forum and the discussions on the topic were a great help.

Since our kids were born we’ve kept some of the techniques and along with a push to eat a little more healthily... try to be adventurous too.

Over the next couple of months we will be totally remodelling our home. Doubling the kitchen among other things which gives us an opportunity to redesign from scratch.

I thought I might ask for the wisdom of others in this forum about what features/ toys would be in their dream kitchen.

Where would be the right place for such a question?

Anyway, hope to participate more in one way or another.

Welcome Tom. After redoing our kitchen not long ago...a couple of things come to mind.

First, exterior ventilation. Previous kitchen had a recirculating fan. We installed a good range hood with external venting. The difference...odors, smoke, grease....is dramatic. That is, perhaps, obvious.

Other small things that make a big difference...Place dishwasher in a location where you can load and unload and put things away without moving much. If you cook a lot, you will use the dishwasher a lot. Efficiency makes clean up less arduous.

Finally, a mistake I made so you don't make the same....it's not a huge deal, but I recognized it after the fact. Make sure there is power on both ends of your island (if you have one).

I'm sure you will get more, and given your experience in restaurants, you recognize the need for efficiency. That is a plus at home too.
