Flavoring Culinary Crystals
Brendan_Lee_56950
I just received my order of some product from modernist pantry and to my surprise they threw in a bag of flavorless culinary crystals and I am curious how I should go about flavoring them without obviously popping them. I am thinking about infusing a neutral oil with something and then coating the rocks and drying them on a silpat.

Try essential oils?
Brendan_Lee_56950
That seems to be what they recommend on the site. I was hoping for a more simple method since I wasn't really planning on having these at my disposal.

Whole Foods sells essential oils, and the ones that are made with ingredients that sound like food (spices, herbs, etc) are fine to use.

that's good to know; it is hard to get straight answers on what is food grade and what isn't.

Before I go stock up on that kind of thing, is there a lot of normal day-to-day culinary uses for those oils?

I would choose a couple of oils like a nice bergamont, lemon, or other citrus oils as a start. Keep them refrigerated to preserve their freshness. You'll find that a couple drops of these can be added to seadfood dishes, sauces, salad dressings, and other common preparations easily as a way to add a big seasoning impact.

Hmmm, i like the idea of adding it to dressings. Thanks.
