Converting and Beginning to Use Grams
robert.c.brown15
Hi All,
I am getting scales for Xmas (200 gram .01 increment and 11 pound .1 gram increment) and I am excited to start using grams and weighing everything and more comfortably doing recipes on this website!
I was looking through the EMP cookbook last night, which is notorious for using cups, tablespoons, etc., and I was curious how I could go about scaling those recipes to grams. Is there any convertor available out there that would work? I'm probably most interested in liquids as different liquids weigh differently and no 1 cup is the same. I guess that would be a pretty specific converter as it would have to cover a lot of different ingredients, but was curious if any of you knew of any resource to help me out.
Thank you!

I mentioned using Kitchen Calculator Pro in the "apps - discuss" thread.

I think for the purposes of that book, which irks me since it's do beautiful, you would be best following the volume measurements and then weighing what you come up with, repeat that 3 times for an average and then use that going forward for the book for those particular ingredients. Make sure you keep notes though!

Wolfram alpha, as well as the nutritional information on the sides of containers, are fine too. Really intuitive syntax.

Agree with all the previous suggestions. Also, if everyone enters the weights they find in the ChefSteps ingredient wiki (click on any ingredient in a recipe, then click Edit, then hit Set in the Volume Conversion section), we'll start gather that data and eventually offer weight/volume conversion right here on the site!
