Macarons are flat.

Today, I attempted to make Macarons. I followed step-by-step directions but, I had many problems along the way. For some reason, no matter how long I whisked my egg whites, it would not stiff up. Along with that, the cookie ended up flat, sticky, and it dissolved in my mouth as if it was only sugar. I'm in desperate need for some help. I don't understand why this happened.

A small amount of fat or grease residue in the whisking bowl or on the whisk will stop the whites from stiffening so make sure they are spotless. More often a small amount from a broken yolk when separating your eggs will do exactly the same.
