Salted Licorice?

I noticed that there's a new recipe for licorice up on the first page. Fantastic! I'm in the camp of people that loves black licorice and I can't wait to try it out.

However, what I love even MORE than black licorice is salty licorice (or, more properly, salmiakki), which is effectively black licorice with ammonium chloride. The problem is, I haven't been able to find either a recipe explicitly for salty licorice (one that I found from a quick google search used sodium chloride, which I'm guessing wouldn't give the same characteristic flavor) or a supplier of food-grade ammonium chloride. Does anybody know where I could find either of these things online or otherwise?

Also, anyone else a fan of salmiakki? I've got a few brands at a local shop (my favorite is currently Katjes Salzige Heringe), but I'd love to hear from other people about what else is out there!

We were suprised at the amount of salted licorice available when we went to Copenhagen and it's sure is an acquired taste! (Even my wife who love black licorice and have a salty tooth couldn't eat too much... ) From what I see you can probably have some at the pharmacy, the veterinary, at aquarium supply stores, chemical supplies or even at hardware store where they use block to clean soldering irons. I wouldn't use the last one but the others seem alright to me.

In Sweden salty licorice is a very polarized thing, you either love it or hate it. However it's very easy to find! My favourites is a hard candy called Lakrisal and the Norwegian Ifa. You can even buy food-grade amonium-chloride in hobbyshops, it's often called salmiaksalt. It cost about 8 or 9 usd per 100 gram.

As I recall from the semester I studied in Denmark many years ago, salt licorice was god awful. I'd be willing to give it another try, but not sure I'll come around to this one. The Danes loved it though.

Lakrisal was my preference, I usually import a bunch of it when I go visit my folks.

I'm not sure if anyone is still watching this thread, but I found this recipe:

20 ml licorice extract

1 tsp ammonium chloride

8 gelatin sheets

2 tbsp sugar

2 tbsp potato flour

Instructions:

Soak the gelatin sheets.

Heat the licorice extract, ammonium chloride and sugar until they are boiling, then mix the gelatin sheets in. Mix a bit of water with the potato flour and throw it in after that aswell.

Pour the mixture on a plate or something, preferably on wax paper so it doesn't stick. Let it cool and cut it into pieces.
