Anyone Forage in the Los Angeles area?
Huy_63293
I live in Los Angeles and have been interested in foraging. From what I hear, Los Angeles is actually a great place for this, however, I don't know where to start! Anyone have good tips for location and plant identification?

I went to a forager dinner a few months back. It was amazing! I'm giving you a FB link because this woman hosted the dinner and knows these forager chefs well.

I always want to go on these but it's always weekends when they do these foraging events. :-( I'll make it one day!

I just watched an episode of Top Chef Duels (Bravo) that featured foraging in LA. Check it out!

I just rewatched the Top Chef Duels episode with the foraging challenge, and these are the people who assist the chefs. The main guy at the site (Pascal) helps Chef Jacobson.
Also, it means that my initial supposition of them being in the Santa Monica mountains for that segment was probably wrong.

I don't know this people, but it looks like they might know their stuff. I have been foraging for years in Europe and ... although I am a trained botanist ... I got 99% of my foraging knowledge on trips and workshops with other foragers. Once you get into it ... you'll probably find out that you have many edible wild plant species growing already in your backyard ;-) Have fun!

They look to be in the east SFV/Pasadena area. Think I might check these guys out. Thanks for the share.

Thanks for the tips Martin! I may have to sign up for one of their classes.

Have you seen this guys?

They seem to be LA based. I was thinking to check them out some time. But I have found also other people on the internet. It is always best to start with experienced guides ... as they know best what is edible and what not ... and have also a lot of experience with identification (which I found most important with mushrooms). If you are serious about plant identification ...
The Jepson Manual
is THE book on Californian plants ... but it might be a bit of an overkill as it is aimed at botanists.

The place I buy pollen from is in Santa Barbara. And it's not exactly cheap. If I could simply collect it, that would be awesome.

I saw that episode! Partly why I'm asking but even before the episode aired, I was interested. One of my favorite chefs down here is Jordan Kahn of Red Medicine.

Fennel has naturalized all over SoCal- I've seen (and harvested fennel pollen) it growing along the freeways from LA, Orange and San Diego counties

They just featured some of this on the recent Top Chef Duels episode with Stefan Richter and CJ Jacobson. It looked like they were in the Santa Monica Mountains/Topanga/Malibu Canyon/Fox Ranch area. My wife said it could be a fun way to get outside and do stuff.
Also, I recently learned that fennel grows wild on Catalina. I love fennel, so it might be worth the odd ferry trip.
(I live in Encino, btw)
