@Brendan, aren't you clever. When I was in school, ".edu" didn't exist, we had to wait for Al Gore to invent it! I live in Dallas and as a concession to collect sales taxes here in Texas, Amazon is building a huge warehouse about 20 miles from me. Should be operational sometime next year. Y'all have convinced me, before I place another order, I'm in for Prime. Just wish the cookbooks on my wish list (yes, I need a 12-step program for cookbooks too!) were included. And the CS recommended scales ... But on balance it sure seems worth a try, thanks!

If you have a smart TV or blue ray or smartphone you can download the amazon app and it let's you stream media they have pretty current movies and many are in high definition.

Like they stated above a few extra bucks but free shipping makes it worth it. Always prompt tracking number and 2 days or less. Try it for free, you can always cancel it

@Jack, you just shop around for Prime eligble items... sometimes it might appear to be a few dollars more than non-prime, but the free shipping makes it a better deal. Some of the items have shipping costs $5-$15!! I rarely pay for shipping. Which isn't to say never, but definitely rarely.

@jack yes some things aren't prime but when you do a search you can click on eligible for amazon prime as one of the filters so you can narrow it that way as well.

@Jack in general - it seems you pay less, you get free kindle content, you can borrow books, you get free shipping on a ton of things, I've literally bought $3 items and had them the next day, it is great. I haven't even explored the free media - I don't watch that much tv.

@Johan, thanks - that's what I was guessing. The same item is available from a number of vendors, some of which qualify for "Prime" shipping and others that do not? Assuming I can find the stuff I want from "Prime" vendors, I'm in!

It depends, some items aren't prime but you usually can find it from other vendors too.

But the Prime isn't for all items, correct? I have a cart with 7 items and the cost is about $60 and the shipping is almost $25! Its the scales recommended here at CS, plus calibration weights, a Beginning Modernist Cuisine book and some chemicals. Am I missing something? Some items are described as shipping from Amazon and others from third parties. Thanks for the help!

Me too. Being in the DC metro area we have some amazon warehouses nearby. One time I ordered something at 8am and it was at my door by 6pm.

I have had prime for at least 2 years and I LOVE it, I couldn't live without it. The amount of money I save on shipping alone more than pays for the membership, and I watch a LOT of streaming content on there, like TV shows (they usually have all the previous seasons) and a lot of good movies. But the shipping is the best part of prime; sometimes I get my stuff next day, because I'm close to one of the warehouses. It's usually easier and cheaper for me to order stuff from Amazon using prime than to make a trip to the local target / walmart / home depot.

I just ordered a backpack and sleeping pad on Friday and got it today by 11am shipping was free.... It's well worth it just for that. Not sure if you have a TV or blue ray with wifi but with prime you get access to a bunch of TV shows and movies you can stream for free. Pretty cool.

@Jack I wouldn't get a starter kit as they are overpriced and don't yeild much in the way of chemicals. If you search amazon they have everything in small or bulk sizes, if you have Prime (which I highly reccomend) you get free 2 day shipping on most of it. I would error on the side of more rather than less as it seems that the larger quantities are not proportionatley more expensive, I made my own sodium citrate because I had citric acid on hand, but next time I will order some. I have some Willpowder stuff and it seems really good and decently priced.
