Methocel Purchasing guide

There are a ton of different formulations of Methocel out there and I am curious if there is one or two versions that are used most frequently. I'd like to get one or two but don't want to have a bunch sitting around that is only good for some very specific purpose.

@brendanlee page 265 begins the methocel chapter. page 268 > A4C and F50 are their preferred two to have on hand. I can't believe I remembered lol.

yeah...methocel is a whole nother beast for me.... It is the one i know the least about.

I have that book actually, I'll have to go back and look. I have a feeling I probably scanned through that part quickly because I didn't have any on hand.

@BrendanLee Consult the Ideas in Food book, great recipes and why they work. There is a chapter on Methocel and they specifically point out 2 that work for MOST applications. Amazon has that very book en route to my house, so if I remember I'll post. Otherwise, your answer is in there. Great book btw. I highly recommend owning a copy.

its so wide range... F50 has great applications. Some people use it to make stabalized foams like shaving cream consistency... but it has that "taste" ... I like F50 for aeration then dehydrating for crisps..i think they did it in the alinea book too. to me, its the hardest to use...People i used to work with used to work directly with the company that manufactured it...for insight

I am more referring to a guide for the home cook. I don't cook professionally so I don't have the space/money for a wall-o-powders so narrowing it down to maybe the two most commonly used formulations is what I'm looking for guidance on.

If you understand the meaning behind the name of the methocel you can just get what you need and what will be the best application.. All the letters and numbers in the name all have a specific meaning
