Hi everyone,
We’ve been doing a tuning exercise on the visual design across the website. The heritage of Gotham, our erstwhile typeface, (commissioned by GQ, inspired by the architecture of New York) and style (hard, modern but technical) were not in line with the tone and voice that ChefSteps has been speaking with recently, and will continue to speak in for years to come: friendly, modern but relaxed. We needed something new.
Like Gotham, Circular is geometric typeface, yet makes use of simpler primitive forms (circles, triangles, and squares) for character construction. It was designed by Laurenz Brunner in 2007 as a fresh take on the best parts of classic geometric fonts (Futura, Avenir, Avant Garde, and others) and borrows from the successful parts of each font in its parentage. And with more robust features like ligatures and tabular figures, it’s just a way better font. It was also designed for the screen with hand-tuned font hinting, whereas Gotham was rather unsuccessfully adapted years after its release. Circular has character and warmth, but also authority. Like us.
I hope you enjoy the new changes we're making. Let me know if you have any questions.
