Black cocktail

We have a new cocktail we're trying to develop for our new menu. We're doing it the backwards way of trying to have the cocktail to fit the name rather than the name to fit the cocktail.

The name we have is black graphite. Maybe take inspiration from squid ink to achieve the colour. Any suggestions would be welcome

Be interested to see what suggestions come from this. At first blush, squid ink doesn't seem to lend itself to a cocktail, but I'm not averse to trying it.

You could use black vodka and experiment until.........you wake up. :-)

Not many black foods, squid ink is just not something people are going to want in a cocktail, but coffee would obviously work.

Could do with a little more information, why is the name so important, what price point are you looking at, etc.?

The venue is in an old fashioned lace factory, the signature range of cocktails all stem from lace related names (the twist hand, cotton trader etc.). we've thought about black jack infused sugar syrup, licorice infused syrups. Black vodka isn't something we want to use ideally, we're a rum bar by trade. Price point is £8-10 (sorry, british)

As a rough guide on the style of our other cocktails, we're using a take on a hot buttered rum, but cold; rum, apple juice, nutmeg, cinnamon syrup, vanilla bitters, cream top, powdered butter

I think I know that place, actually I've been there. (I don't live that far from Nottingham). Might come up again before too long as I have a few friends in Nottingham.

I recall having black rum while in Jamaica in the 2000's and "think" I found it http://www.reservebar.com/t/type/spirits/rum/the-kraken I remembered we enjoyed it at the time......but really was a bit of a blurr.... :-)

If I had to build this, I'd go semi-sweet. I would start looking at the flavor of burnt coconut with molasses to set the color and adjust accordingly with Rum as the base. I think it would be really cool to have a black chocolate foam placed on top right before service. OH- and a steel straw to drink it with!

Black lava salt has a sort of graphite sheen to it. Maybe you could build from that; encrusted on the rim of the glass or on a cocktail stick.
