I have 14 coming for Christmas dinner, we call it "Orphans and Derelicts Dinner"(our friends who have no family to share a holiday dinner with and drink heavily). My wife thought I must have suffered a stroke when I said "sit-down/ buffet", this will be a first for me.

To the point, I am doing a Prime Rib roast this year and was hoping for some feed back. Recently I have seen a lot of Austrailn beef at one of the local supermarkets and have no experience with the product. I saw some Rib Eyes in the case and asked how much for the entirebone out roast.......7 BUCKS a pound !! that is almost half of the bone in prime rib around here. So i bought a steak, salt pepper, pre-sear, SV 1:30 mins, 134F, post sear.. it was damned good. was I just lucky or have others had a chance to try the Australian Beef ? I know meat varies piece to piece so you always run a slight risk.

That is VERY inexpensive. Not to get all paranoid, but unless it was some sort of sale, I would question the source (please do not take offense). WHY so inexpensive? Now to the main question Is/can Australian beef be good. In a word, yes, it can be excellent. Hae had it here and in Australia and have yet to be dissapointed. So, mark me paranoid, or jealous (or both). at $7 a lb, it would be worth buying a bunch.

I lived in Asia for a few years and that was all we could get was the Australian beef. I think it is pretty much comparable to US beef. Their grading system is a bit different but I always found it to be very good.

I used to get whole vacuum packed free range Australian beef tenderloins at a suburban NYC supermarket for $4.99-5.99/lb. Excellent quality, typically had the slight "funk" of non-grain-fed beef, but my family liked it.

Generally speaking, the fact the Aussie dollar is getting smashed against the USD is helping you too. As an Australian I can tell you that prices for us have gone up as exports to yours & other markets have become more attractive. And totally agree with your assessment Todd, while you can get cheap & crap beef anywhere if you really want it, we've got a very good grading system down here & quality tends to the good.

Thanks, buying one today and I am going to "reconstruct" it. did it last night with a 2 1/2 in rib eye....unbelievable with every bite perfect.
