Lava salt

I was meandering around my local Whole Foods when i saw this stuff. Kinda pricey: 90 g costs 13 USD, but i splurged. It has a very unique flavor. I won't buy again, but i will be looking into buying activated charcoal to make it myself. Very interesting stuff.

I got a big bag of black lava salt from a relative who was in Hawaii. It's pretty good, but I think the real value is just the visual beauty. The flavor is a bit bolder than regular salt, but I doubt you'd really notice if cooked into a dish. It's a great finishing salt, but not good enough to justify the price. Especially since I don't really buy that the activated charcoal in the few grains of salt you use has any real "healing powers," and that's why the price is so high.

I also find that in most cases where I would want to finish with lava salt, a nice smoked salt would work just as well. Or you could switch gears and use truffle salt, wine salt, herb salt, etc.
