I got a call this morning from the butchers at the local Tom Thumb (part of the Safeway Group) telling me they had lamb shanks at $0.99/lb.

I now need to work out what to do with 37.5lb of Australian lamb shanks. I will try Lamb Rillettes with the first four.

The butchers have my number next to the phone and call me when lamb goes on extra cheap sale. I happily buy all they have (18 bags, two shanks per bag this time).

@Tim, thanks for the info. That store is reasonably convenient for me, I'll check it out. I've been using Costco and Kuby's, and to a lesser extent, Central Market for lamb.

That is freaking awesome! I love to braise them with tomatoes, raisins, and warm spices. Interesting served with a barley pilaf.

The Tom Thumb I go to is at Preston and Forrest. They have a large Kosher market and a large selection of Kosher food, particularly lamb, outside of the market. They always have a large selection of lamb shanks, semi-boned legs and Frenched racks of Australian or NZ lamb. Most other Tom Thumbs I go to are lucky to stock lamb. I also buy basic pantry items there including Weetabix, which is $1.00 cheaper at Tom Thumb than the Whole Foods across the road for the same box.

@Tim, which store do you shop at? Years ago I spent 90% of my grocery dollars at Tom Thumb, but since the Safeway takeover I don't shop there much. Sad because the store at Preston and Frankford is 1/2 mile from my house ...
