I've always wondered what these actually taste like. Our mushroom selection in South Africa is pretty basic. I think the most exotic mushroom I've found here is a shittake

When I was there 2-3 years ago, I went on a wine tasting drive/tour (outside of capetown) with a private driver and I asked him about truffles and less commercially known products. We shared the same feeling that they are likely growing but there aren't many knowledgeable (maybe next to none??) foragers but think there is a possibility for more.....exotic tubers and such available just no one to search for them. Could be worth reaching out to a local restaurant.

Agreed foraging is very limited and the only places to do it are in the Cape, which is a shame, but the restaurants are getting them somehow. Importing maybe? Not sure, but I have seen trucks driving around Cape Town sometimes that have 'Mushrooms for Africa' on the side, which might be a good place to start

For what it is worth, I would even ask the local wineries. There may even be an opportunity there for you if interested.

Thats a shame Alex. Morels are the king of mushrooms in my book. As my wife will attest I talk about Morels 50 weeks out of the year and she looks forward to morel season just so Ill be gone and not talking to her endlessly about my hunting plans for the season. While dried morels don't do then justice they do provide a very nice aroma and make a great stock. The mushrooms themselves are not so great after cooking.

So.....I would look into having some shipped to you. They are a little pricey though.

And if you get the chance to taste a fresh one.....do so at all costs.
