Carrageenan, the new MSG?
Tim_McLoone_80828
Just read this, wondering if it's going to be the new MSG. I know we all use it in a few recipes here, curious to know everyone's thoughts.

I don't really have an opinion as to whether or not it should be included under the organic labeling umbrella. But if they take out carrageenan, they'll have to put in something else (or several somethings). It won't really be the same though... unlike swapping MSG with yeast extract or hydrolyzed vegetable/soy protein. I really hate it when you look at a product that brags about not containing MSG, but it contains 3 or 4 extracts/products that are sources of free glutamic acid. Jerks. It's not unlike the "uncured" bacon craze that started sweeping the nation seven or eight years ago... but I digress.

MSG and CGs are two different products where MSG is related to neurological components and CGs related to gut components. Some may argue those are related, however, CGs are difficult if not ipossible to digest , so could be uncomfortable for some if in excess. MSG is different which is why Glutamate is used in things like pain studies etc. So, likely they both have audiences that shouldn't ingest them on a regular/daily basis.

They should replace it with bio, fair-trade, no gmo irish moss extract and the problem would be solved ;-)

This article
https://chriskresser.com/harmful-or-harmless-carrageenan/
suggests that many of the articles quoting dangers of carrageenan were actually carried out on poligeenan, a laboratory degraded substance derived from carrageenan and deemed not safe for use as food.
