I live in the US as well Arthur. Metric scales better for going up/down in size... easier to use units of ten.

Accuracy. Ease of use. One bowl (mostly), one scale, precise.

The measurements are given in grams, because, as you noted, th
is is the US[A], and they are free to put down the measurements however they please. Also because weight (mass) measurements are far more accurate than volumetric measurements, and grams are more accurate than using ounces. You also might find these videos useful.

However, if you insist on using a less accurate form of measurement, if you click on the edit scale and units button, there will be an option to change it to ounces.

also .. look at the currency that you bought Joule with... one and tens buddy! Would you want go back and use pieces of eight?! Arrrrrr... not me, my hearty 💰

... *sigh*

Once you use grams you will want every recipe in grams. It is so easy and so much more accurate.

Precision in cooking means measuring in Grams, Milliliters, and Fahrenheit, regardless of where you live.

Press the "edit scale and units"-button on top of every recipe to change to oz, if you must.
However I strongly discourage you to do so, because of what has been said here in the comments already.. Metric measurements are much more accurate!
Also, there are only a couple of countries in the world where the Imperial system is being used. The rest of the world uses the metric system. Thus, on an internationally oriented platform such as CS, it makes perfect sense to default to the metric system, right?

Celsius.

Make 'Murica weigh again!

I tell ya what.....pick a bread recipe....any bread recipe.
Measure the ingredients. Then, same recipe, weigh the ingredients.
Be prepared to be surprised!!
brian_martin2001
He's not arguing about the weight. He's is expressing discontent about the units the weights are in.
wolfiegirl
Nor am I arguing...I'm just asking him to do a little test to see WHY the ingredients are listed in grams, that require weighing out vs measuring ingredients out by volume.
brian_martin2001
What he is referring to is the breakdown of an avoirdupois pound into 16 ounces (not fluid onces). He isn't suggesting the measurements listed in volumetric measurements, he doesn't want themeasurements in metric weight, rather British standard units of weight. So, i guess I'm rather confused as to what the point of your suggested test would be, as it as nothing to do with his post.
Angelo_197648
No, Fahrenheit, not Celsius because of the degrees of variation. Since all devices are going to measure both out to the same decimal place, Fahrenheit will ALWAYS be more precise.
nico.beemster
That is not a shortcoming of the scale but of the device.
And, practically, there is not a single oven on the planet that is accurate to, say, a tenth of a degree F or C. This simply is not necessary. My SV unit is accurate to half a degree C and this suffices.
So, perhaps it comes down to a matter of taste. I personally like the elegance and logic of the metric system.

Arthur????????????? Three days... your first post .... Are you still in the US? or...duhdahdun...are you being held ransom in a country (I suspect this may be the work, if true, of.... duhdahdun... Canadians!) that weighs in grams (no need for capitalization... eh!) against your will?!
If you're still in the US please put a piece of meat or veg (no need to weigh in grams) in a bag, turn the key and see the future ...post a picture of the results ... 📸!!
🙂

Agree with the other posters that once you go metric you will want to stay there. I've used this scale for years and it is easy.
