You need to watch the price of the plant pods that you need to buy as refills, as some of these systems make it difficult to plant directly from seeds.
If you want to go over the top look at the

I grow all sorts of herbs and pretty much they grow like weeds! You could easily grow your own in clay pots, good soil (Miracle Grow has a good one) and a bit of watering. Sun exposure of course but a small clay pot can yield plenty. You don't have to have a whole lot of space either. Even if you have a small apartment patio, if you have sun exposure for four to five hours a day, you can grow whatever herbs you desire much more economically. As for plants, you can get starter plants at most big box hardware, Wally World, or local garden centers. Or you can start from seeds because they really do grow like weeds! Couple of seed sources:

To add to what's already been said, you can also take many of the herbs that are sold in the grocery store put them in a glass of water near a window, after a while roots will develop. Then just transfer to vessel of choice as byrdie says. Plant nurseries usually carry a variety of indoor grow lighting which might give you a little more flexibility than one small crowded tray.
Anyway good luck! Being able to just cut what you need for a dish is indeed a pleasure!
