Hey All - Looking to get a few new additions to my knife drawer and have hit a wall via the routes available (epic edge and Korin). Anyone got solid line on well stocked supplier. Am interested in 2 of Grants choices (masanobu gyutou 24cm - can anyone tell me the difference between the regular and the 'damascus' version. Is it purely the polishing/graphic appliqué? AND the ASAI HAYABUSA PETIT GYUTO (6.33 in / 160 mm)......Cheers in advance if you can save me trying to source it from the Land of the Rising Sun

If you read on ee's site Asia-san passed away so that takes care of that until Yamamoto-san takes over and even then will they be Asai? I went trough every site I know of (a lot) .. only found them at ee. The only thing I know about masanobu is they're made by mcusta. Seems like expensive vg10 to me?! Damascus performs the same duty as a stainless or soft iron san mai jacket, to protect the core steel... damascus is there for beauty and most damascus for production knives is factory made ... you will pay dearly for the hand forged stuff!! I've got lots and lots of links to things sharp and shiny from Japan and the stones to keep' m sharp!

Curious what you'd recommend for a VG-10 or better 24cm gyotu

Do you rock chop or push cut etc.., thin laser or thicker workhorse, righty/lefty, are you set on vg10, know how to sharpen? I know the budget according to Korin and I know you like wa handles so lets go from there. I could also point you to kkf and their recommendation thread?! All sorts of jk nerds over there!!

VG-10 only because it comes recommended - equally happy to hear or be pointed somewhere to balance the opinion out

Gregor I think you will need to repost... I see you commented but they're not showing in the thread they're up in the globe. I do see you asked about the advantages of the othe steels ... the powdered steels typically will hold a better edge longer and the ginsan aka silver3, ginsanko being very high in carbon content and on the threshold of stainless with its chromium content makes it very much like white steel in its ability to sharpen very easily and get very very sharp.

Nothing really wrong with vg steel if heat treated well by a good smith though. Shun gained a bad rap for its heat treat making some of its blades rather chippy. I own a few vg blades Tanaka really does it well and the cost is very reasonable but you trade a little fit and finish issues. Portland knife shop sent me these images in my quest - they confirm what you were saying pd3ski that the masanobu is a Korin rebrand of the same knife at the top (they weren't a fan of the Damascus on that knife) did like the idea of metal butt on the Klein handle but will pop in to see how these wands feel in hand
