Seems like I just can't get my reply to stick.

This will be my 4th attempt, so I moved over to tools. I'm learning to copy/paste my reply just incase they do the Houdini thing and disappear again.

Also that I've ordered a bunch of sharpening tools based on your advice and stuff I've learned on line. 140 grit diamond flattening plate, 2 in1 wetstones 240/800 and a 1000/6000 grit, universal stone holder and rubber mat, and a felt block. Stuff should all come in today and tomorrow. I saw a strop kit that I think I'm going to get, has a metal plate and 2 magnet attachments (Balsam wood and leather). Also comes with a small bottle of 1 mic diamond oil. I guess you can't just spit on it.

I'm going to have my nose to the grindstone this weekend turning my current knives into tools that are actually sharp and useful and not just pretty to look at. Let the journey begin!"

Wow nice job otter!! Way to jump right on in! Sounds like you got recommendations in their forum?! Good work on getting the low grit stones! And a very solid move on getting the atoma, I put one of those replacement 400grit on the flip side it's a 2 in 1 plate now. They are useful for knife repair/wide bevel thinning and the 400 will help on your 1k and up stones, as 140 can be a little coarse for a final on those. Yes I have that metal base strop mount 👍 I use balsa loaded with water based diamond .25 .50 1.0 mic ... the leather meh. These are fun for seeing how far you can take the edge ... like splitting celery molecules ...but mostly I use them for after I do a wide bevel refinish spa treatment. After 6-8k I jump over to a jnat (Aiiwatani from jns) to put the final edge and also maintain that edge for a long time before it's necessary to go lower again. And for other reasons.

Tips and advice... relax have fun with it ... don't over analyze it!! Numbers of strokes angles etc...

Use a sharpie to paint your edge (remove exces w/alcohol) , use med>light pressure, use the whole stone, relax but have a locked wrist into arm up to shoulder using body motion, smile, feel for the burr!! If you're a righty do the right side first feelin for the burr along the entire left edge, flip and remove burr which will then produce a small one on the other side.. move up. This is important down in the low grits because this is where your edge is born! Above 2-3k I like to sneak up on the edge. Listen to the edge on the stones! This will come with experience. Keep your loose fingers up from the edge as sometimes as you're drawing back the edge can jump on skin... it's like a little Hobart slicer ;-( and coarse stones can wear away skin, this is also no bueno! Try cutting a paper towel through your progression, it won't lie ;-) Stay loose have fun in your zen.

Remember otter even though you are hairy save some arm hair for the next knife in line!
