Biggest and Best Induction Cooktop

Hey Everyone,

Wife and I are looking at homes to purchase and most we like have gas already in them and that's exactly what I want for the range. Already have a 36" Blue Star RNB 6 burner range picked out for when the time comes, but today we are actually looking at a house we really like that probably doesn't even have natural gas in the street. Electric stovetop there now that I would replace with an induction cooktop.

As I was looking at having a 6 burner range I was hoping to find a 6 burner induction cooktop. No luck so far.

I know you can buy induction units as single burners like the Mirage Pro, but I was hoping there would be something out there that would be more of a cooktop. Worst case I guess I buy something I like, like the Thermador Freedom induction top, and then buy 1 or 2 of the single induction tops when I need more than 4 pans.

Anyway, haven't had to think about induction until these past 24 hours and wanted to reach out to some people who I know have plenty of experience with them.

Chefsteps has an older GE Profile induction cooktop that they've spoken highly about. They make a 36" model ( PHP9036SJSS ) that has 5 induction elements and is much cheaper than than the Thermador.

Thank you. I think the ability to move the pots and pans where on the Thermador is incredible, but not a make or break. Appreciate it!

I have the 36" Blue Star RNB that you are referring to and because we had no natural gas I run off propane (which is event hotter) works like a charm.

The house does have propane! I thought it wouldn't work as well as natural gas. That is excellent news. Hotter? Really?

I have the max Burton and the mirage pro and a 4 burner gas stove......even before I got the mirage pro I used the max burton more than the other 4 gas burners. If I were to do over, induction first, gas second. JMHO. The thermadors are so tempting!!!

Things have changed and I'm back to induction. Really liking the Viking 6 burner cooktop. Really liking cooktops over single burners.

I would prefer a cooktop as well. Just no place to put it. Still waiting on my spinzall, looking for a rotovap, oh the toys

I just made a new post. I can't find a range that is comparable to the cooktops I'm liking. The Viking one looks perfect apart from the knobs (not sure about the temperature sensitivity).

I'm thinking I may need to have something built so I can install a cooktop and an oven.

Too much electricity though? A range is easiest...

I have been using the 36" GE induction cooktop at home for over four years, and gas Viking and Wolf 48"-60" cooktops and ranges in client homes five days a week for five years. Two weeks after using induction, you will not want to go back to gas.

The Thermador flex top sounds good until you realise you can only use 4 pots. The burner spacing on the non flex tops works as pots can only get so close together due to handles and lips. Nearly all the induction cooktops have a bridge function to allow the use of a griddle.

As you can see I can use 5 pots and a griddle on my 36" cooktop.

So I think I'm going with the 30" GE Profile. I like the lay out and it just works for me. I'd prefer the 36", but I'm pretty positive I won't have room for it. Oh well. Now to buy some new pans!

Question - do you have a Miele with the rectangular power flex (I think it is called) cook zone? I believe it acts like a bridge and heats up for a griddle.

If so, could I turn that area on and put 3 or 4 smaller pots there? It's just a large rectangle heatin whatever is on it, right?

The thing you are doing in the middle with the 3 pans on one zone, could you do that with the long griddle bridge? Or does it just sync the two burners together at the same temp? It would be great if the entire rectangular area became available for more than just the 2 pans that can go on there. Some others, like the Miele with the Power Flex zone or the Bosch, look like the entire rectangle becomes a zone. That would be ideal as I think I can only do a 30". Thanks!

no the bridge just syncs the two burners.

Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I have the old model with the 5 burner so it did not that bridge like the new model. Therefore I would not be able to answer your question but my understanding from the specs is that you should be able to use it as you describe.

How do you like the Mirage Pro? Pretty good reviews on Amazon but the negative ones are quite alarming.

I like the mirage pro due to the number of temperature adjustments available. It doesn't seem to heat a pot of water (or stock) near as fast as the max burton, so i often start the stock there and moe it to he mirage pro because the PC bars are easily maintained no matter the type of stock/product where with the max burton I have to watch things more closely (it tends to shoot over with beef stock at 2L+product),. It's nice for keeping things at a lower temp and does ok for sauteing once it heats the pan (but again, max is faster). I'm glad I have both and I would personally hesitate getting two Mirage pros over the set up I have.

What Max Burton do you have? Since this would be in addition to a 30 inch cook top, I'd probably only bring it out when I need to boil water or something. I don't want an extremely cheap one in case I ever do use it for more than that, but boiling a pot of water would probably be a common use.

Personally, I'm a gas cooktop fan. We recently redid out kitchen, on a budget (we are going to sell our house in a few years) and replaced everything with Bosch appliances including gas cooktop (here you can find a review on it).
