Grinder

anyone have a rancilio rocky? I need something new and trying to figure out what would be best. I'm debating if that's worth the extra money or if a Baratza Virtuoso would be enough. I make French press coffee every morning and espresso every now and then. Maybe once a week. It's tough I know because there seems to always be another price bracket and people argue back and forth on all the forums I'm looking into. But even the rocky would be pushing what I really want to spend on a grinder right now.

I wouldn't get the Rocky if you want to use it for both. It's a bit of a pain in the ass (and very wasteful, coffee wise) to adjust the grind level on it. Additionally, the threads on the top burrs are very fine and easy to mis-thread when re-inserting after cleaning – which you should be doing regularly.

I'm not sure what the preferred home grinder is these days, but I wouldn't recommend a Rocky today.

I use a baratza and would recommend it. Careful though, the finest setting on some models won't work as well with espresso so make sure you buy one that's compatible with both.

I have had the non dosing Rocky for about 3 years. I use it for espresso 99.999% of the time and batch grind for press pot when the folks are down for a visit. If I were to upgrade, I would go with the Baratza Sete (~700) as it clears after each grind. For the money, the Rocky is a very solid grinder. My only real compliant is that the coffee drops straight down and then compacts for a 90 degree turn through a small hole so it does clump when grinding for espresso, which is kind of a known characteristic. I don't have an issue going back and forth between the 2 grinds, just make sure you run about 1 dosing worth of grinds to get it up or down to the desired grind
