Water and Heat Retention Balls
Doug_Barnes_45073
Has anyone used the sous vide water balls and did they really make any discernible difference in heat & water retention?

Thanks in advance.

Yes the principal of keeping heat and water in the container is valid especially for longer cooking but here’s the dealbreaker for those.... you’ve just dropped them on the floor 😭😭😭
A much better solution is some closed cel foam cut to shape or my down and dirty method using bubble wrap... it gets a little wet but dries out to be reused again and again

...it's a mess waiting to happen. Who wants to deal with a boatload of ping pong balls in the kitchen? For high temp, or a cook of longer than a couple of hours, the simplest solution, if you don't have a cover, is plastic wrap. I've been covering my vessels with plastic wrap for years. All you are looking to do is limit evaporation. I'm generally not worried about evaporative cooling. Joule...or any immersion circulator can generally keep up with no problem.

depending on your container you are using, if there is an appropriate lid for it already, do a DIY job and cut out a hole in the lid for the circulator.

I agree with the previous posters. I used them for about two months before exploding with rage at the balls bouncing all over the kitchen any time I removed or added product. The only time I would consider using them is if I am cooking in a large cooler.
Do you have a joule

+1 for the closed cell foam...a yoga mat works great!

‘exploding with rage'... lol 😂
All I had to do was imagine that happening and I had a case of inner monologue turrets #

It’s pretty annoying when they fly around the room. My toddler still finds them on occasion.

Agreed, I'm not a fan. Plenty of other easier and equally effective options.
