IR thermometer

Thermoworks had an IR thermometer on sale for $35, didn’t really feel the need to have it but it was cheap so I bit the bullet. No big loss if I don’t use it.

What do people think of them and find them useful for?

Maybe check the temperature of your Joule as it’s cooking a ribeye at 124.5degrees?

deep frying, if I'm crystalizing chocolate, tempering chocolate etc. You'll probably end up using it more than you realize. :-)

“Use it more than you realize”... that’s the plan! I have some uses. Eg I have a double burner griddle but the burners are not the same size so I’m curious how they heat at different rates.

I love mine and use it all the time for many different things, but it is not as reliable as a Thermapen (color of material affects reading, outside of Vitamix is not the same temp as the inside...), so I would recommend buying both. This is the one I have:

They're great. I think everyone should have one along with a Thermapen as mentioned. I use mine all the time - getting a rough idea of where something is temperature-wise while on the stovetop, knowing when a pan is hot enough to saute/sear something or when a pizza stone/steel is adequately preheated, as well as other non-food uses like knowing if my house's air conditioner is still functioning and frustrating the cat etc...

to be honest, I'm afraid that my air conditioner will break soon as I didn't even maintained it for a long time... By the way, I am afraid too look at the prices of air conditioning services as it's expensive I know...
