I have found Kitchen Calculator Pro to be handy for converting weights and measures, and for scaling recipes.

The impetus for the question is I'm wondering if an app solution really is a good idea. Not sure if a tablet in a kitchen environment is totally advisable. I mean, I often have mine in the kitchen with me when I'm working, but it's not a primary resource.

I find it takes away my attention so I don't bother with apps. The only thing I really have on hand is my phone to set a timer for things and to use the calculator at times. If i'm following a recipe I will usually jot it down on a piece of paper or print it out. I always keep my notebook around for notes on what i'm doing or to record measurements but otherwise it's pretty non-tech in the kitchen.

I tend to not liking to have electronics in the kitchen, I prefer printing things out.

I don't like electronics in the kitchen either, except for a USB digital voice recorder ($25)...it's extremely handy when developing recipes and the like because, without a doubt, I will forget to note something extremely important if I try to rely on just jotting things down when I'm busy.

I copy and paste recipes and make a lot of kitchen notes in Evernote. It's handy to pull up on the iPad while in the kitchen.

I use apps as much as possible. For SV, there's nothin' beats SousVideDash, which is the original name for the PolyScience Sous Vide app (the developer kept the license to sell it).

I'm not particularly happy with my recipe database software, so I won't mention it.

I use hand written recipes (in %) and prep lists taped to the uppers. The prep list will have blank space on it for writing times in and out for product.

I have tried using the iPad, but swiping the screen with batter on the fingers doesn't work to well.

I tried a new timeline method this year for Turkey Day; organized everything on a spreadsheet with time (in 15-minute increments) on the rows and columns for each dish. Then color coded each step for each dish; blue was prep, yellow was assembly, red was active cooking time, green was passive cooking or resting/setting time.

Unbelievably easy to follow, can't believe I never did my prep/job list like that before. I had just purchased a lined notebook and colored pens for the task, then on the day realized I could just do it as a spreadsheet.

And yes, ye blue painters tape on the cab uppers is how I keep the recipe sheets and job list front and center.
