Please help me choose a vacuum sealer, feeling lost!

Having recently purchased Joule sous vide, I am in need of a vacuum sealer. alas, upon reading review after review for endless hours, I feel I have made no progress.

First, I live in Europe. Secondly, I would like the vacuum sealer to be able to handle dry and wet foods.

What would your recommendations be? Thanks for your help!!

Hello. If you really want one that handles wet food, you need to go for a vacuum chamber. That is very expensive, so think about it. If not, I have a vacuum sealer from LAVA (German brand) which I am very satisfied of.

Honestly, I have a cheap foodsaver brand one, and it works great. I do wet things all the time; just make sure that your sealer has a manual ‘seal’ button. Put the bag in the sealer, clamp it down, and then let the bag ‘dangle’ from the side of the counter. Start the vacuum, have your finger ready on the seal button. When the liquid starts to run up the side of the bag, press ‘seal’ really quick.

Also, don’t disregard the utility of the ‘Dave Arnold water displacement method. Works very well for most things.

And, yeah, chamber vacuum sealer are wicked expensive.

Just, don’t spend lots of money on a sealer that is not a chamber vac. The expensive non chamber brands work no better than the cheapies

Vacuum sealers typically can't handle wet foods well without freezing the liquid first or unless you babysit it as Wes mentioned (not a bad thing, just not as fun ;-)....). If budget allows, I would recommend a vacuum chamber.

My food saver from Costco has been a workhorse. I freeze liquids in rectangular plastic containers and then pop them out into a bag and vac seal them for longer term storage. For wet stuff the quick hit on the seal button as soon as liquid begins to move up the bag usually gets a good seal. If not, dry it off and do it again.

Stef, I'd recommend you to have a look at Foodsaver (as far as I remember, these are available in Europe). I have two different FoodSavers (expensive = vertical, cheap = horizontal) for different purposes - like you've mentioned, dry and wet foods. If you can handle it and you're going to seal A LOT like Stacy suggested - get a commercial model. Overheating problem is real.
