Breville HydroPro Plus
chadxp
Hello,
I just purchased the HydroPro Plus. Are there any plans for this to be integrated into the Joule app?
Cheers!
Chad

How do you find it compares to Joule?
chadxp
Arriving today, will update after this weekend.

Do you have a Joule too? I would love to know the heating speed vs Joule (one of my favorite things about Joule is how fast it is vs other circulators).
Have fun with delta-T cooking!

Would be cool if Combustion, inc thermometer (Chris Young's new thermometer) would interface with Joule for this to work together (though unlikely to happen?). Theoretically should work, right?

I think you need a much thinner probe than the Combustion one to work with a SV bag.

I have a few Joules, all the Anova's from Anova One on, and both of the Nomiku's
Will let you know.

Here are the non-scientific results that have surprise myself. The test was done with 12QT All-Clad pots. I used 6500 grams of water in each and ambient in house temperature was 75F as stated by the nest, no lids. I wanted to make another batch of the The Ultimate Rich as F*¢K Brownie which calls for So Simple Sous Vide Dulce de Leche which states Preheat your sous vide circulator to 203 °F, which did not work of all of the circulators, see below. I choose 194 because that was the max for the HydroPro Plus. I also did the calibration for the Thermapen for 1/2 hour

. See photos for more details. Let me know if you want different testing. I now have questions to submit Breville. Every device was in the same room and had a dedicated circuit/breaker without a extension cord. Called the power company to let them know I was bring them online at the same time!!!!
Item Start temp device 203/Max Thermapen Time to 194 Temp measured by Thermapen
Joule 74 203+ 75.0 39.32 min 194.0
Bre Hyd Plus 75 194 75.2 30.55 min 192.2 probe 192.6
Anova Pro Gen2 75.5 194 75.5 26.13 min 194.0
Anova One 75 203+ 75.5 57.30 min 193.3
Control Freak 75 203+ 75.5 24.27 min 193.8

Did you get a chance to play yet?

It is at the top, I am unsure why it does not the full text. So I pull the text from the reply and reposted, the line below that are you able to open it and see the pictures?

Joule start temp 74, time to 194 was 39.22 min, temp measured by Thermapen, 194. Hydro start temp 75, time to 194 was 30.55 min, temp measured by Thermapen, 192.2 probe 192.6. Anova Pro Gen2 start temp 75.5, time to 194 was 36.13 min, temp measured by Thermapen 194.0. Anova One start temp 75, time to 194 was 57.30 min, temp measured by Thermapen 193.3. Control Freak start temp 75, time to 194 was 24.27 min, temp measured by Thermapen 193.8. The Hydro Pro and the Anova Pro Gen2 does not let the temps to be set about 194.

Sorry about all the bad formatting. The reply below has all the details and pictures.

Love the temperature guide built into the the device, love the screen, and also the quick heat up time. It is a bit louder than the Joule, and way bigger. Since it could not hold 194 I have a replacement coming out crossed shipped.

Sorry Chad, we are dealing with a bug in the forum. Hopefully it is fixed soon!

Thanks mate!
montebello1964
Awesome, thanks! Makes me want to get a Control Freak (which I already wanted).
montebello1964
This was before you got a replacement HydroPro Plus?
chadxp
Yes. Breville crossed shipped me one. The new one is almost perfect, the 194 limit is the only issue. The Joule wins there. The volume of water that it moves is a bit crazy! It makes waves in the pot!

I just got the hydropro as well. It's reading just 1 degree over the actual temperature as confirmed by two thermapens that are properly calibrated. Even the probe that came with it confirmed this until I "calibrated" it and it started to match the temperature of improperly calibrated unit.
Contacted Breville/Polyscience... hope I'm as lucky as you and they send out a replacement...
chadxp
Breville/Polyscience/ChefSteps are all real pros when it comes to service. Here was a follow-up suggestion from Poly. I already did the calibration also before the test.
Typically, any time you're over 80ºC we recommend having a lid on it to combat evaporative cooling. 90ºC is really pushing it. The Thermapens have an inherent inaccuracy of ±.7ºF and I believe our HydroPro Probe is ±.5ºF.
I would say to run the calibration feature of the HydroPro Plus and measure the water with the supplied probe with the lid on. If you're within ±.5ºF of the bath temp, I would say you're good. I would also say to do this at 135ºF / 57.2ºC as this is the median of the range.
Cheers!
Chad

Thanks for your response Chad.
I actually did run the calibration and it seemed to have just used the unit’s calibration to calibrate the probe at higher temperatures. It had no effect on the temperature the actual unit read.
I actually placed the unit in an ice bath and it was off by 1.4 degrees. I tried it with a lid and got it it within .6 degrees at 140 which is a little better. However at 140 my other machines don’t need a lid and are within .1 degree at all times.

A bit concerning that more than one person is having accuracy issues with an expensive "pro" device made by a former laboratory equipment company. After all, sous vide is really all about accuracy (vacuums and plastic and all that are irrelevant).
