A pacojet for $200?

So Ninja just released an ice cream maker that looks like it shares basic design features with the Pacojet. You freeze a puck solid, then it 'shaves' off the ice cream.

Has anyone tried this? I know that it won't live up to a $4k machine, but curious if its any good for home use.

Chris Young and Dave Arnold were talking about it on Twitter a couple days ago. They're going to coordinate a teardown and review. I'm very interested to hear what they have to say, since both have pretty extensive experience with the real thing.

Just ordered one for the studio to check it out... Thats less than fixing the broken pacojet we have... Let see how this works out.

Look forward to their review. The plastic containers do have me a bit concerned......They also recommend NOT to place the containers in a chest freezer.....bc they get too cold....(?)........which is concerning.

Still might be reasonable though and wonder how they would handle frozen purees (pacojet is awesome for those) and frozen nuts etc.

I saw that too on Chris Young/Dave Arnold's twitter discussion. Seriously tempted to take a flier!

However, it doesn't look like it can vary the number of servings that get "shaved" like the Paco.

I am about to pull the trigger on it. Several years ago I was going to bite on the FRIX AIR but it too is a tad $$. But for $199.99 it maybe something to look into and if Dave is going to tear it down, I'll wait for his review.

First go (it arrived late, and I had few ingredients) -- dumped home made yogurt in a bowl, added a juiced lemon and some sugar to create a lemon yogurt. Froze as directed, ran it through the lite ice cream cycle with a re-spin....I am impressed. Creamy frozen yogurt! Looking forward to trying an actual ice cream base, among other things.

Well, I'm convinced. Picked one up Friday at bed bath and beyond. And, of course, with ask the malarkey going on over the weekend, it sits sadly unused on the shelf, still.

Custard ice cream base...frozen and spun as directed...light years ahead of the bowl-in-the-freezer ice cream maker that I have. So far, I remain impressed.

So I got mine, and last night made fresh peach sorbet, peach frozen yogurt (we have a lot of peaches right now!!) and CS egg-free vanilla.

I'm super impressed. Fantastic texture, super quick, very dense. Am definitely going to sell my cuisinart maker that I've had for several years!

Picked up my CREAMi yesterday from Bed Bath & Beyond. Got a great deal with their discount and on online coupon for $153.13, including tax. Not sure when I'll get to use it as my better half says it is an Xmas gift!!
