Joule oven app & Studio Pass

I'm wondering if I should go the extra $100 for the Joule Oven rather than the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, so I'm trying to find out whether I need a Studio Pass subscription to use the Joule Oven mobile app and access ChefSteps recipes for the Joule. I noticed that the oven comes with a 6 month Studio Pass subscription.

What happens after the 6 months are up if I don't renew? Could I still use the app? Could I still access the Joule Oven recipes and other related information about use of the oven, or does the Joule Oven basically operate as a Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro without the Studio Pass? Is there any doc available online that provides the details on this? Also, is there a list of the Joule Oven recipes available for the app?

I'm looking to replace my original Breville Smart Oven, which has served us well on a nearly daily basis for the past 10+ years, with a bigger Breville that also has air frying capability. The Joule oven's programmable multi-mode cooking and ChefSteps recipes sound like they might be a big plus, but an annual subscription cost to use the app and the recipes after 6 months makes the cost/benefit equation more complicated.

I don't have a Breville oven, new or old, so take this with a grain of salt (but I am a long-time Joule user and Premium and Studio Pass subscriber).

ChefSteps has 100s and 100s of recipes, and accessibility is Studio Pass > Premium > Free. But there are even 100s of free recipes.

In the app (at least when using it for Joule), a few of the basic sous vide recipes are actually present in the app (and also on the website). But for most recipes that can be searched in the app (sous vide or not), when you click on them it will take you to the website. So the website has everything.

There may be some new content in the app specifically for the oven (I think I've read that). Since July 2019 when Breville bought ChefSteps, they've gradually been using Breville ovens more and more in their recipes, but the recipes are generally designed for cooking in any oven, even if they show a Breville being used. The recipes also often have a box that says "Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Approved" with some additional guidance for a Breville oven. For example, the recent Johnny Cake recipe says this inside such a box:

Cooking with a Smart Oven Air?

Bake at 350 °F / 177 °C with Convection.

Rack on position 7

Preheat for 5–10 mins with pan in oven.

Bake for 28 mins.

But the main recipe isn't specifically for a Breville oven.

Personally, I find Studio Pass well worth it. It is the highest quality recipe content on the web, no matter what appliances you want to use (conventional oven, Breville oven or Joule). But admittedly it isn't cheap, and there is a lot of free content on the web. But ChefSteps is where I always check first (I get so annoyed when they don't have a recipe for whatever I'm trying to cook lol).

Hi! The Joule Oven APP is free to use if you have a Joule oven. It and the content inside the app are free and no subscription is required to use it, just the need to have the Joule oven to unlock the content. There are more recipes available on chefsteps.com if you have a studio pass membership but the two are not required for the use of the oven.

The smart oven concept isn’t necessarily a new one, but the Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro successfully tacks on some “smart” features.As you might have guessed from the name, this multi-purpose Breville appliance is a collaboration with ChefSteps. Though the Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro isn’t a precision cooker, it does promise to take the guesswork out of food preparation. So does it deliver?

The Joule Oven app houses a collection of step-by-step recipes that automatically initiate any of the 13 total settings on your oven, offering to take some of the hassle out of getting dinner on the table. Still, as you’ll see in this Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro review, a lot in terms of accessories, cooking performance and cleaning is very similar to the $399 . And like most Breville gadgets, this one isn’t cheap at $499 — but it can replace your oven.

Like the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, the Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro is a fairly large, rectangular countertop appliance featuring a drop-down door and towel handle. The unit we tested is a familiar, brushed stainless steel, but it comes in a black stainless steel finish as well.

The LCD display, buttons and dials are also identical to the interface of the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, but they’re no less sophisticated on the Joule Oven. The controls are highly intuitive for anyone who’s used a standard toaster oven.Measuring 21.5 x 17.3 x 12.8 inches and weighing 23 pounds, the Joule Oven is more substantial than most standalone toaster ovens and air fryers, but still light enough to manage out of the box and onto the counter without help.

Accessories in the box include a 13-inch non-stick pizza pan, 2 wire racks, 9 x 13-inch broiling rack, 9 x 13-inch enamel roasting pan and an air fry/dehydrate basket.We put the Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro through our standard series of toaster oven and air fryer tests, and it scored high marks across the board. Something the Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro fell short on was toast, but the Joule Oven offered a beautiful ombre across different shades of darkness for our multigrain bread and toasted each piece evenly on both sides.When we baked brownies, we found the knife didn’t come out clean after the bake time suggested on the Betty Crocker box. But, after a few extra minutes in the Joule Oven, the brownies emerged cakey on the surface, slightly crisp on the edges and perfectly fudgy in the center.

Our tests included air frying two kinds of French fries – frozen and homemade. The frozen French fries offered the ideal goldeness and satisfying crunch after a standard cook time, even with the basket a bit more crowded.For two methods of cooking Brussels sprouts — air fry and roast – they came out crisp on the outside without losing moisture on the inside. Roasting them is more forgiving for a larger quantity, though air frying a single-serving of greens is quick and easy.

Our tests include preparing three different types of chicken: baking breaded chicken cutlets, roasting a whole chicken and air frying chicken wings. The chicken cutlets browned evenly and retained moisture, though we helped out the moisture levels of our whole chicken by adding a bit of water to the roasting pan as a precaution. We set the roast chicken to 400 degrees for one hour, but noticed after about 35 minutes that the skin began to char. As to save dinner, we covered the chicken loosely with aluminum foil for the remaining 25 minutes, at which point the innermost thigh successfully registered 165 degrees.We opted to follow the Breville Joule Oven ordered from couriertrackingfinder app’s recipe assistant for the chicken wings. ChefSteps “Leveled-Up Air-Fried Chicken Wings” recipe demonstrated step-by-step how to season and coat the wings, then offered a prompt to preheat the oven. Unlike the June Oven, which actually lets you preheat the oven from the companion app, we still needed to press the physical start button on the Joule Oven to begin cooking, but none of the settings were up to chance.

Hey Kyl, fan of your content. Wondering how we add recipes to the app? Simple things like 'bake 400 for 30 min > broil 10 min > keep warm 165' would be great to setup in the app. Even with just a timer and mode select. I noticed the mac and cheese recipes in the app are in low baking dishes, I like a deep dutch oven mac. That means 400 for 20, broil for 5, keep warm. But I can't set that without manual manipulation. I will absolutely send you guys a special gift, or beer, if you can get this feature added.
