Chinese New Year 2014

The lunar new year is the 31st. Anyone doing anything special for the new year? Favorite traditions, recipes, etc?

I've got a few recipes i'm putting into the chefsteps machine that I'll publish later in the week for a steamed radish cake (lo bak gou) and roasted pork belly (siew yuk) which are two very traditional Chinese new year dishes.

For scheduling reasons, I've already covered all my CNY bases.

First course of Japanese new year's tea. Sorry for the poor quality. Rice with gold, sashimi on shiso with grated wasabi, eggplant pickle, chestnut in a sort of chestnut/syrup puree, anchovies, black beans, daikon with ikura. Not pictured, my very favorite, a fresh mochi in a creamy miso soup. Subsequent rounds followed with lobster, asparagus, smoked salmon, pickled and simmered vegetables.

Water for tea boiled in iron with live charcoal is incomparable.

This New Year is much more my speed than the whole noisy affair centering on Times Square. So much so I did it twice.

Started with lunch at Gramercy Tavern - veal sweetbreads, grilled monkfish with cauliflower, little bits of yuzu, a subtle dash of Japanese style curry powder. Trio of sorbet to finish - mango, pear, apple.

Ended the day celebrating Hong Kong style with 1860s puer tea. At this rate it will be a great year.

Ok here's the last of my recipes for the new year.

Lo bak gou or Steamed radish cake. We call the daikon white carrot in Cantonese so you may see it listed as steamed white carrot cake sometimes.
