Looking for a type of Strainer
robert.c.brown15
Hi All,
Was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a piece of equipment. I came across it on The Cooking Issues blog awhile ago and can't find it anymore. Basically it is a plastic container with a spout on the bottom so that you strain the liquid from the bottom up, hence leaving the fat floating on top in the container. You turn a knob to release the liquid and then turn it again to close it up. I hate spending so much time making a sauce for instance and then there is the fat pooling on top. My mesh strainer only picks up so much. This plastic container thing with the nozzle on the bottom sounds like it could help me eliminate that fat. Plus it would work for making gravy and an assortment of other things.
Thank you!

They're called fat separators and are widely available at kitchen stores. Probably Amazon too ... Shouldn't be more than $10-$15.

Thanks but that isn't it. I think what I saw was actually a piece of lab equipment that Dave was using. Not actually made for kitchens.

Yeah that's it. Not exactly how I remembered it haha. Thanks.

Yeah, i'm not sure I would want one of those out on the counter too often. Glassware like that is fragile and I know I'd break it for sure.

I really like the nozzle. Not really into the glass though. Too bad there isn't a plastic bag version or something.

They sell cambros with spouts on them.

The tapering really helps with the separation.
I kind of like the look of
this fat separator
though.

As a bonus, you could probably use it as a saucing funnel as long as the liquid isn't too viscous.

You can easily find polypropylene separatory funnels at Amazon. They cannot break and they usually are cheaper...

I use Very Fine Mesh Strainers by ZENPRO. It's set of 3 and made of stainless steel. It's pretty nice and it works great. And it also has a free measuring spoons.
I purchase it here:
