I'm getting a blender, which one should I get?

Get the Waring. I made my decision between those two based on the fact that the Waring doesn't have digital anything and thus is less likely to fail on me. I also didn't really care for any presets and whatnot, the adjustable dial on the waring is pretty awesome.

We like the Waring. Blendtec has a few clever innovations (the five sided pitcher really does work well), but the simplicity of the Waring's control and it's reliability gets my vote.

I got an Oster Versa. It's quite a good low-priced alternative if you're price sensitive.

A question about these high powered (and priced) blenders: how much heat do they transmit to the items being blended? If you started with say frozen fruit would you get a cold or lukewarm smoothie? If you blended a puree would the puree get cooked?

They're powerful enough to knock out a smoothie in seconds so it won't heat up but you can definitely cook a soup in there. I've thrown in a jar of roasted red peppers, tomatoes, garlic, basil, and onion and let it run on high for 5-8 minutes and it gets pretty hot.

It can make a plastic lid smoothie in just a few spins....

For regular frozen fruit stuff, they are awesome since it goes so fast.

If you're wanting warm smoothies, get the thermomix...........I've had that thing dancing in my head ever since Chris gave us the recipe for bl pudding....let me see, lab sieves, stronger blender, thermomix, rotary evaporator, centrifuge.......and the list continues to grow.......

I love my Waring. Did I say I LOVE MY WARING? I only wish I had purchased the smaller top as sometimes I just want to make things in smaller quantities and I think the smaller top would be useful. But, I do truly love my Waring. I have never noticed it heating up anything I have used it for either. All the investment is in the super powerful motor and the good blade - and there is really nothing more needed, IMHO.

For those who have the Waring MX1200XTX, how are you liking it? Is it holding up well? Any regrets or only good things to say? How is it for making ice cream? Do you ever feel like you need a tamper? Thanks for any advice.

I just got mine last weekend. I used it to blend some watermelon for aqua fresca and it made quick work of it. I threw in large square ice cubes which is had no problem handling. I will say that I did find myself having to shake it every now and then, but honestly I think this is necessary for just about any blender.

I've had mine for a while now and I can only compare it to consumer grade Kitchen Aide blenders. While the Kitchen Aide blended stuff, this one liquifies it. When making cream of asparagus or cauliflower I would strain the liquid afterwards. Not any more, right back into the pan.

You can turn ice cubes into snow in seconds for margaritas and smoothies.

And the one thing they don't tell you about ahead of time is clean up - just fill to the lower line and a couple drops of soap and it washes itself. Well almost.

I love how it washes itself! This is something that Vitamix uses as serious marketing, but in fact any blender will clean itself this way. I love my Waring. I've had it for about a month now and haven't taken it off of my counter.

Have you guys successfully made ice cream and soup in the Waring Xtreme? I would mainly want to use it for frozen fruit smoothies and green smoothies, but also ice cream and hot soups. Any success with those?

Yes to soups and smoothies. Have not made ice cream but I do use it to blend up centrifuge juice and ingredients for sorbets.

I have a vitamix and love it, but I would recommend the blendtec here. The blendtec has 2 features that set it apart:

1) The warranty. I know it was mentioned that waring has less buttons so less could potentially go wrong, but that's only really true in theory. These machines are built to last . Blendtec has a 7 year warranty, which I believe is double that of the waring.

2) The jar . The new wildeside jar is awesome. It's the biggest and most efficient out of everything on the market. I have trouble with whole apples in my vitamix, but that's no problem for this container.

You can also get a really good deal on the blendtec. I saw a post on slickdeals.net for one with 2 jars at khols in the $270 range.

You will love whatever you chose. I highly recommend anyone considering a high-speed blender get whichever one comes with the best warranty. Remember, performance is essentially the same between all 3 major brands.

I just don't see the need for buttons and programs, a dial is much more simple to use than a set of buttons for controlling speed while the machine is running. I thought hard about the blendtec when I was going to purchase my blender and couldn't bring myself to do it. I also don't think the one at kohls is the heavy duty one that would be comparable with the commercial versions of the waring and vitamix which are substantially more expensive.

I found @Johan's advice compelling, so there I was about to pull the trigger on the Waring when I saw a review mentioning black flakes. There are reports of blenders from all 3 major brands (Waring, Blendtec, Vitamix) producing little black flakes in the blended liquid, though it's much harder to find info about Blendtecs doing this, maybe just because they're less common? Do other users here have this problem? (Apparently you can test by blending water then pouring into a white bowl.)

Do we know what the flakes are and whether they are safe to ingest?

That's interesting. I have not experienced that at all with anything I've blended. I've blended things on high but I can't say I've done that exact water test. No idea what it could be. A physical reaction that occurs when the water is blended with such force, etc.? Probably not though haha. There isn't anything black in the container or around the blades though.

I'm guessing either some lubricant or little bits of plastic which the fast moving water wears off the lid.

Yeah afterwards I realized the inside of the lid is black. I'm not sure it would be a deal breaker for me.

p.s. just did the test because I was curoius/bored. No black flakes or anything. Got mine in December from Webstaurantstore.com. It doesn't have that new graphic sticker that seems to be used now.

Never had this happen before, i blend water every time i use it since that's how i clean it and i've never noticed this ever. the model in that video is different than the one I own though.

Never seen that, blend water and soap every time I use it, I'd guess it is possibly a dried out lid and plastic.

I adore my Blendtec. It's powerful and super easy to clean. I've ground almonds for flour in a few seconds and all the other things you expect from a blender. No black flakes except the time I dropped a cap in by accident....
