A bit of explaining from Spain

This showed up yesterday......I received the "what the he^%^ did you buy that could come from Spin in such a big box? Rob and Brian-I think we should cast a vote to charter a boat for all those who need to hide things on their way. :-)

What About Tools?

So is this thing really a must have (to a ChefSteps member definition of must have) or just a convenient thing to have when the need arises. Very few recipes I come across (meaning my european cookbooks) rarely call for it and sometimes only use it as a blender. What will younuse it for?
Obviously you must have your needs, but I'm not so sure I'm ready to make that plunge anytime soon.

I'm waiting for my step down transformer so haven't used it yet. I also purchased through ebay as I don't think I would take the plunge at current list prices. I was on the verge of getting a smoker or egg and this sort of cropped up. Though I do a fair bit of the cooking here, I'm not the only one but I'm the only one that uses the pressure cooker and some of the other tools. The blender I use a fair bit for many things, including soups , purees etc, but using the various different tools to accomplish what could be accomplished with one was one of the deciding factors (as this is a common complaint). I don't mind using all these things, but others are turned off having to do so. The hope is this will diminish some of the various tools to accomplish some of the dishes. I will report back and I have lots of ideas, but to be honest, it took a while for me to wrap my head around it and I'm sure we could get by without, but I think it will allow me to do some things (like the bl pudding) and make other things a bit easier. So, do I think this is a CS member "must have"? Personally, not yet (I was thinking bigger family picture). We will see as time goes on. I'm much more enamored by a rotovap or centrifuge........but haven't found near as good a deal on those.......yet. :-)

We used one in the cooking class we took in Barcelona this year. Wouldn't call it a 'must have', more of a 'should have'. Definitely a time saver, but I wouldn't necessarily say it yields a better product.
That said, of course, I want one.

Update - Tried it for the first time last evening. Start to finish for apple butternut squash curried soup - 40 minutes. Other than peel and core the apple, and chop the butternut squash, all was done in the thermomix. I get it. It really was easy and worked well. not having to chop the shallots, garlic etc was a real treat. Being able to adjust, time, temp and stir speed on the fly is nice. Blend when finished and passes through sieve. Can't say I would consider this "modernist", but definitely convenient.
