My understanding is that this speeds up he cooking process (hydrates the beans) and brining them in Salt is said to be even better. If I recall, Harold McGee said more than 4 hours isn't necessary (for water) but don't recall the tests on brining. (I do our kidney beans etc in a brine for 12). That said, overnight, typically is more convenient.

You also clean them (Not to be overlooked with dried stale stuff that can be subjected to a lot of nasty stuff) and they will rehydrated cook evenly. It also allows for as Todd said shorter cooking time, preserving more nutrients.
