Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and I'm reasonably sure almost everyone here is excited for that. And that's because of the food!! But are there any other holidays that get you excited about special meals? For example, at Christmas time, there is the tradition of the Feast of Seven Fishes in Southern Italy. Or the Passover Seder for our Jewish friends. What other holidays tickle the chefticular lobe of your brain?

The generic end-of-year season (I usually work on Christmas, NYE and any other holiday): whether I spend it with family or friends it's the only time of the year when everyone else agrees that spending all day, every day cooking is the way to go, and I feel less of a basket case and more in tune with the "normal" world.

Plus it's a nice tug of war between me insisting that we try something different and everyone else complaining and asking we stick to traditional stuff. This year I'm giving my mom an immersion circulator as a gift... Oh, it's going to be fun!

For us it is probably Christmas, we use Eve to do a Hispanic / American celebration with tamales, turkey and other goodies, Day to do a Swedish christmas table with ham, sausages, meatballs, rye bread in broth, herring, salmon, pickled herring, soused herring and whatnot else.

Christmas in July. The ability to eat Christmas food (seafood off the BBQ, ham, salads, mince pies, brandy sauce, etc) as it should be eaten - outside, in the sun with beer in hand during the day, going for a swim, getting a tan, discussing the Boxing Day Test (although it now happened six months ago), all while wearing a silly hat from a Christmas cracker.

When I lived in the Southern Hemisphere it was still Christmas in July, but the food was more in line with what those is the Northern Hemisphere eat, washed down with litres of red wine.

We always did turkey for Christmas and ham or roast beef for Thanksgiving in Canada where I grew up. I still can't get used to Turkey for Thanksgiving now that I'm in murica

Well the pork belly and daikon cakes I have up on the community recipes are tops of the list. The awesome new year cake is a textural dream and even better as leftovers sliced into spam like slices and pan fried in eggs. Not to mention real deal wonton soup with extra long noodles.

For me, Rosh Hashanah brunch at my wife's grandmother's house. She is Sephardic and still keeps up all of the old ways, especially the savory pastries like bulemas, burekas and filas, plus rice pudding, sweet roska bread, huevos haminados and so on. Everything is delicious and that sense of participating in a continuous tradition is so meaningful to me. I don't cook a thing for it, just show up, eat and feel special.

Being Canadian in the US, Christmas is still high on my list. Only now that I've learned more and am permitted to cook, I get to break all the rules that I grew up with (more turkey) and try to be creative.

Chinese new year is my favorite holiday of the year. Food is so important to us Chinese that the holiday is a foodies dream and the traditional dishes are phenomenal
