So I'm having a hard time resourcing this stuff. Its either an issue of quantities or food grade. I can't get any where. I live in southern MN. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreaciated!!!

There is no difference between food-grade and nonfood-grade. It all comes from the same source, whether medical or industrial grade. I would call around welding suppliers and see who can provide you with a tank of liquid nitrogen. Usually, people bleed the gas off for welding purposes, but the tanks also have a liquid output port.

Thanks for your response! Apparently the guy I talked to didn't know his sh*t about food grade quality. And the places I have called are welding facilities. They just don't want to sell in small quantities or retail. I'm stuck so far!!

Our big tank (140L) of liquid nitrogen is rented, and including delivery charges, costs us about $230. This will last a couple of weeks (unless you're us, and then you'll go through lots of these tanks). Conversely, you can try to buy a 25L or 50L liquid nitrogen Dewar (these show up on EBay from time to time) and you can get them to do the fill up at their location (we've had to do this in the past).

thanks for your help. I'll do some research. Let you know what I figure out.

the welding shop i purchased my LNG from sold me a dewar as well. It was pretty expensive ($600) but there really aren't many places that will fill unless you have dewar.

Praxair and Airgas both told me that they don't rent. Airgas told me I have to fill out a credit app if I wanted to buy from them with my own dewar. I filled out the credit app and go figure it's been over a month I never heard back from them. Oh well. I haven't purchased a dewar yet.

I want to take the plunge into liquid nitrogen (figuratively speaking). What size dewar is recommended for the home chef, figuring that I'd just be using it for one night's dinner party.

?
that, from what I hear, is the smallest size someone will fill for you and I have also heard that getting smaller amounts than that is problematic because of how much you lose per day of storage without a dewar.

Random thought...I did another batch of homebrew over the weekend, and it took me a little while to get my wort chilled down to pitching temps just using bags of ice and stirring. Could you just add LN to the hot wort to chill it down rapidly? Or would there be a mini wort volcano since you're adding LN to a very hot liquid and the LN is going to expand?

@Jim
Basara I have a 10L dewar that I use for one night's dinner. It suits my needs. I just wish I didn't have to go get it filled all the time
The people at airgas are starting to wonder how much "welding" I'm doing lol

Does anyone need access to small dewars for liquid nitrogen? I sell and rent to medical clinics as of now, but looking to rent to the general public for use in the kitchen and experiments. I have small 4 liter pitcher style dewars up to 30 liter large dewars. Contact by email until I get my eCommerce page up for streamlined access for these rentals. Eric.Glenn@Cryogenic-Services.com
