What is the best “hole-in-the-wall” restaurant in your town? What should we eat if we visit?

Oh, geez...... L.A. is full of these places! You want Jamaican? Front Page in Inglewood. You want Thai? Head to Hollywood Blvd between Western and Normandie and take your pick. You want Mexican? Go to Zacatecas in Hawthorne. You want Indian/Pakistani? Go to Al Noor in Lawndale. You want high end cuisine? Try bagging a ticket to Trois Mec.
All those places are in strip malls.
For nostalgia purposes, I'd say get a fried oyster po'boy at The Gumbo Pot in the 3rd and Fairfax Farmers Market. Used to be my weekly ritual: Walk to the market, get that week's
Autosport
at the newsstand, get a po'boy and relax.

In the Boise area I think one of my favorite places is a Vietnamese place called Vina. Best egg rolls anywhere. But for a main dish if I am in the mood for some Asian cuisine I would go to Thailand Express out in Nampa. Some of the best food I have ever had. Fresh and all made in house. You cant beat the flavors and the passion that goes into the cooking there. Just wish that we would start getting some more restaurants that aren't chains and fast food around here.

Boston:
Galleria Umberto in The North End. It's a rosticceria, cash only, long lines so get there early (11:45 ideally). The arancini is unbelievable.
El Pelon in The Fenway. It's a burrito shop. Fish burrito is great, but you would be hard pressed to find anything bad on their menu so you can't go wrong.
Thai North in Brighton. Specializing in, you guessed it, Northern Thai food. The laab and Khao Soi are amazing.

Lots of fave spots in Seattle, but I regularly stop at the
Saigon Deli
for bánh mì and Vietnamese coffee in the International District and
La Fondita 2
for tacos and tamales in White Center. It continues to amaze me how far $5 goes towards a pretty phenomenal meal.

Took the train into town from SeaTac and was kind of surprised to see such a vibrant Vietnamese community. I guess Seattle was point of entry for a lot of post-war immigrants?

Columbus OH.........haven't found a "knock your socks off" type of place yet. It's more of a fast food city (I think whitecastle may be considered haute cuisine here)......

In Sydney, my favorite place to dine in, is in the Steersons Steakhouse. They offer premium quality in all aspects of the dining experience — from the tablecloth to the steak knife and the steak. Steersons remain true to the steakhouse fundamentals yet exhaust new beef trends allowing the Steak Lover to appreciate an enhanced steakhouse experience for both body & soul. Try also their seafoods and desserts! it is really worth it!

New York City: B & H Dairy Restaurant. The worlds best challah french toast, fantastic mac n' cheese, delicious barley soup. An excellent place to take a vegetarian, too. This is a place where two people can stuff themselves for $15 plus tips. Shhhh! Don't tell - it's a secret! It has been there for at least 30 years.
