Question of the Day #45
borgech
In 5 years, what piece of kitchen technology that we use will be commonplace in every home? What are the initial barriers to making this transition, and what are some things that will help break those barriers?

There have been two in the last thirty years: microwave and immersion blender. I don't see anything happening in the next five years. I hope I'm wrong.

I think combi ovens would start to replace regular ovens in homes. Also induction burners replacing normal electric burners.

Induction countertops for one, in five years 3d printers will be common place as paper printers today. From there it’s just a small step into the kitchen. Public vendors with this technology of food preparation will come with certainty.

Induction I think is the only one that has the potential to break into the mass market. I think the first wave of new tech will be in the form of smart connected appliances but they will essentially be the same appliances in their function.

I agree on induction and combi ovens. I also think pressure cookers (because everyone is in a hurry except us). I do believe that electric is the future of the PC and will help lower the barrier. For some reason people trust the electric version more than the stove top. I have both and we all know the stove top is much more robust in its construction. The people i have moved to the PC side felt electric was newer and therefor more safe than old stove top design, I didn't argue and they all love the PC.

Pressure cookers still have a bad rap for safety but also due to their use in things like bomb making. I know people who feel that they are inherently unsafe because of that.

I think the no-brainer answer here is the immersion circulator. Anova keeps selling out, there are now three or four really viable consumer options at ~$200. It's just a matter of enthusiasts like us to continue evangelizing on behalf of the method.

Induction and hopefully Combi.
Food interested people, yes I've had 4 friends buy Anova's the last quarter.

This was my initial thought!

induction and combi. Anova's selling quickly but lots of complaints due to little things may make the larger market cautious.

Damn, I thought everybody had one!
Brendan_Lee_56950
While I want to agree, I actually don't think circulators are anywhere near catching on en mass just yet. There are still too many perceived barriers for people IMO. The circulator itself isn't really the problem, it's the perception of the cooking method combined with the flood of "what about cooking in plastic questions" that are going to limit it for a long time. Hell, even the microwave is still under fire and it's in millions upon millions of homes.
At this point, it's just not convenient enough for people to just impulse buy. Someone will impulse buy a vitamix or a stick blender, or a slow cooker, but with the circulator you have to also invest a lot of time into learning which unfortunately the greater American public does not want to do (not just cooking but with everything).

I agree.
I can't see it catching on in a big way any time soon, if ever.
Most folks I know are still clueless about sous vide.
Brendan_Lee_56950
And while SV cooking is convenient, it is not quick, which is really what the greater public wants. Speed still trumps quality for most people these days.

Built in TV/tablet that allows you to pull up recipes, ebooks, search the web and ultimately monitor and control the other appliances.

Agreed (hopefully on both counts) - induction is far and away the greatest thing I've ever done for my kitchen (and I have 5 Anova Precision Cookers in my house at the moment...2 or 3 for other people mind you...and a Dorkfood DSV).
Induction was life changing.
jason.r.whitworth
Agreed. I think Sous Vide will certainly grow, but not be like in every single home similar to a microwave.

I'll take the over. In fact I'd bet my entire net worth at 1:4 that induction, immersion circulators, and combi ovens will NOT be commonplace in every home within 5 years time. Lets be real here folks, stand mixers and blenders are not yet commonplace in every home - only microwave ovens have achieved that status. I'd like to say convection ovens but I don't see that happening in 5 years time either.
PS: Is it obvious I live in Vegas?
