Great Meals in Sydney NSW

I just came back from a quick trip down under and managed to have the tasting menus at these two places.

The outstanding dish was cured salmon with cherries in Vermouth at Marque, and it wasn't on the menu.

Interesting both restaurants had cloudy/orange wines in their tastings, which are great for pairing.

It's only 17 hours to Sydney from DFW and 15 hours return. Crossing the date line means you lose a day going and you land in Dallas two hours before you took off. It was quicker than swimming.

Having had the pleasure of eaten at a few of the top Australian restaurants in the last couple of years, I have to strongly agree. The Asian flavours, particularly Japanese, are subtly added. Huge use of local seafood. Fermented house made diary products like yogurt and buttermilk are used in interesting ways. Desserts are more savory in nature and real make you think (chervil sorbet goes very well with charred milk custard).

I couldn't squeeze in Sepia while I was in Sydney, but I did get their cook book. I guess I'll have to get back there in the next year or so.

Majority of my meals have been off the beaten path and were enjoyable (have only been 3 times). When I travel it tends to be alone for business making reservations challenging. Quay was able to squeeze me in as a solo last year (for which I was extremely grateful) and I enjoyed the food combinations a great deal. This limitation isn't limited to Australia obviously, however, I do feel like I'm missing something at times because of the limitation.

I was a solo at Bentley 21:30 on a Friday night. Marque was a solo on a Monday night 19:15. I booked Bentley at 18:30 on the night and Marque I saw had free tables (I was staying directly above it) and I walked in.

The big issue is most Sydney restaurants are closed Sunday and only a few of the big ones opened Monday. Friday lunch is usually the only lunch service the high end places do. This trip I had two Sunday nights in Sydney which limited the places I could get to.

In Chinatown it is hard to find a bad spot and most of the Malay places have lines out the door for a reason.

Great that you braved the flight across the Pacific to come to Sydney. Both restaurants are good choices -- and I'm happy to recommend other places should you be coming back to Sydney. Having lived in Sydney my whole life, it has been cool to see the growth of food culture here -- and it's great that it's getting to the point where people see it as worth the long flight.

I left Sydney at the start of 2004 and it is great to see a unique Australian Sydney style of food coming out of the city now. It is also interesting to compare the different style of food between Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, all which are producing world class food relatively unknown in the northern hemisphere.
