KitchenAid food grinder

Good day folks,

I am looking to buy a food grinder to attach to my kitchenAid stand mixer and seeking on some advice on which one to buy. I will be using it for patties and sausages.

I am looking at the either the KitchenAid or the Chef's Choice food grinder.

Does anyone know which one CS team use? (it was all stainless)

For what it is worth, I think it's worth considering how much you might (or might not) use the meat/food grinder. I have the kitchen aid and it works "ok". It's not great , but a few things to keep in mind. You will need to make sure to put it in the freezer before you use it (tends to warm/heat quickly). Keep a bowl of ice water handy to submerge the parts in when you're doing your grinding (depending on how much you're doing-I found I needed it for 3 lbs of meat-not allot) to keep the parts cold. If you will be doing more, or frequent grinding, I would suggest considering a dedicated system (with all metal parts). I use ours for ground beef mostly (chicken meat I get lazy and chop by hand and don't eat many chicken burgers)and in particular for hamburgers as I find Heston's blend rather incredible (as does my son who has a bigger influence in the matter). So, take that for what it is worth. Let us know what you end up doing, :-)

I have the basic Kitchenaid attachment that's made of plastic and am very happy with it. If you're only going to grind food occasionally and in relatively small batches (a few pounds at a time) then the basic grinder is the way to go. It performs reasonably well and is super easy to clean, as it's dishwasher safe (except for the blade and the grinding plate which clean up in no time). Plus, it's inexpensive which is a bonus if you're not going to be using it all the time. I considered the Chef's Choice grinder, but since it's more than twice the price of the KA and it doesn't go in the dishwasher, I passed. If I grinded more frequently, it might have been worth the extra money though. I'll echo Todd's suggestion that if you're planning on doing a lot of grinding, you should consider purchasing a dedicated grinder. But if it's just for sausages every once in a while, the KitchenAid attachment will probably do just fine.

I agree with Todd and Brandon, the kitchen aid model is great for dabbling in grinding and sausage making, if you are going to be doing a lot of it, look into a dedicated grinder.

Sorry for raising the dead but have any of you had the so-called "metal shavings" issue that all over the web or Amazon? It's kind of stalled me in my tracks regarding purchase of the KA grinder.

I doubt I will grind more than a few times a month. It seems ideal but there are so many images of crap that people find in meat after using it. I feel it's lack of proper break in or cleaning personally but having never used one I can't be sure.

Any input?

I haven't experienced it personally. I typically only use mine for burgers, meatballs and bolognese.
