What's an affordable range for your liking?

Not 25k for a handmade italian one.
Been eyeballing Hobarts and Berkels on eBay.
Now if there was a great $75 option

I've looked into them in the past, nothing sub $100 is worth touching IMO. I wish I knew the brand we had when I was a kid, it was very solidly built, we used to use it to make jerky all the time.

I wish I had stolen the old slicer my grandma had

hand cranked?
I know the one my parents had was in storage for a while but I think they got rid of it when they moved, would have loved to have that and the dehydrater that was with it.

Hand cranked - of course, it was removed in one of those "Let's modernise" and throw out cast iron and the like, my parents managed to save the iron and copper stuff.

very nice. I wish I had my grandmothers wok, it was so perfectly seasoned, I can't even cook eggs on a non-stick surface that well.

I saw some epically great looking woks in Japan when I was there, it is amazing what can be accomplished with them.

I bought on of the 12" slicers like this one

I bid and got one for just over $300. Works like a CHAMP!!!!! Shaving meats, etc. is no problem!

@Brendan
, you don't need much help from us ... I have a Chef's Choice model that is so-so. I mainly got it to slice meats for sandwiches and leftover rib roast for french dips, it's okay for that.

The 610 series?

Model 632.

Gotcha. I was looking at that. I seem to not always like Chefs choice..

For the way I use it it is fine. In general, I'm pretty satisfied with Chef's Choice products. And, I was able to acquire the unit several years ago at a very nice discount!

Have a look at Cabellas. They have a good selection. I bought one from them 6 months ago and I am reasonably impressed. It would not do for commercial purposes (even though they call it "commercial grade") but It has plenty of power and does nice thin slices. It is not easy to clean but none of them are, really. Cabellas is good because they have a wide range of choices including the Chefs Choice brand and others. I slice poultry, vegetables such as onions, tomatoes and potatoes and meat. It did a grand job on home cured bacon. I am not thrilled with the way the product comes out at the back but this is really a function of the size/height of the unit as it is difficult to get your hand under the product as it comes off the blade due to a lack of space, unlike the real industrial models which sit up nice and high. (Oh to own a Hobart!) But who has room for a big industrial model in a home kitchen? Certainly not a New Yorker like me!
