Now that the silly season is behind us, what holiday foods and related traditions are you thankful you don't have to deal with for another 11 months?

I was successful in not having turkey this holiday season so that's a plus. I am happy to be rid of the concept of tradition for a while actually.

As long as they aren't Hallmark moments and shopping spree type things, I actually like the traditional foods and family gatherings.

Food shopping with the rage inducing "Holiday muzak". The sad thing is this assault on my ears is much less than 11 months away.

Turkey. I did remove the tendons in the legs which was a great learning lesson and playing with Turkey stock and aromatics without flour to make gravy (that actually tasted like turkey) was fantastic.........but boring (so basically as good as we could make it).

Just the holiday foods. I don't mind holiday foods when I'm planning the meals because I strive for balance (and not just meat+carbs). Between my wife's extended family and my own, we had 5 Christmases this year and I cooked for exactly zero of them. The menus included giant steaks, barbeque, pot roast, a honeybaked ham, and frogmore stew. It was interspersed by some of the fattiest dishes that my mother has ever made, including a "chicken stew" that was basically just a rotisserie chicken floating in half and half. No corn; no potatoes. Just chicken, half and half, butter, chicken stock, and milk. Jesus. I didn't see a real vegetable for a full week. It was terrifying. Did I mention that we drove over 1800 miles over the course of the trip? Which meant a lot of fast food? It was the worst. Ever since I got home, I've been on a hardcore juice and green smoothie kick to try to restore some semblance of nutrition into my life. My new Waring MX1200XTX is making this a lot of fun.

I don't mean to offend, but that 'stew' sounds horrifying.....!

Oh, it was. I was watching her make it and I asked her: "Hey mom... you going to put any plants in there?" And her response was something like "Authentic chicken stew doesn't have any vegetables in it." I didn't bother to ask where the "authentic" recipe was supposed to come from. This was out of character for my mom, who is usually a pretty good cook (in the "Betty Crocker" / "Junior League Cookbook" sense of the word). She'd never made that before for us, and I'll make sure she never makes it again. A bonus: the side item for the stew was a cheese plate. Between every two people was a small cutting board with 3 cheeses on it. Crackers and bread were served. So the meal was basically a bowl of cream served with a side of cheese. Another bonus: My mom made stew that night because they had taken us out to a Mexican place for lunch and didn't want to have something "heavy" like shrimp and grits for dinner. The horror... the horror...

Not seeing 100+ Turkey dinners fly out the kitchen every day in December and having like three days off all month.

I feel quite the opposite. The holidays are so much fun but Christmas and Thanksgiving are so close together thath it's like eating the same meal twice in a row. It would be fun have a "Thanksgiving in March" as an excuse to get people together and eat turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy.
