Flatten a whetstone

I just picked up my first whetstone (1000/3000 Tojiro) and it arrived damaged. Two corners were chipped off. I don't want the stone to go to waste but I would have to remove about a quarter inch of material. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? YouTube says I should rub it on the sidewalk. But that seems neither practical nor very accurate in terms of getting a perfectly flat stone. Any suggestions welcomed.

They make devices that are designed to true/flatten whetstones, but they tend to be expensive. The cheapest option I know of would be to pick up a diamond coated sharpening stone (like the ones made by DMT) and use that to get your stone back in proper shape.

You could chop the ends off and use it as a smaller stone

Pick up a single square of granite tile and flatten your stone (wet!) with either 120 grit sandpaper or drywall

The stone will work just fine with those chips. As it dishes and you flatten, they will eventually grind out.

Flatten it with drywall screen from Home Depot or any other hardware store. You're going to need it to flatten your stones anyway. Waterstones wear away with use (that's the point), and they're useless once they're dished out if you don't know how to flatten them. Furthermore, the way these stones are fired, up to the first 1 mm of stone thickness doesn't sharpen as nicely as the rest of the stone. It really isn't a problem that you'll be removing some surface material.

Have a great time learning how to master your new tool! If you don't fix that first one, gift it to someone else that could use a leg up in the sharpening game.

Mr. Ratner is right, the stones work just fine with the chips in the corners and will eventually wear away on its own. But you should contact the seller and inform them of the issue.
