In Dallas there are a large number of Estate Sales each weekend. On Sundays the items are half the marked price and by Sunday afternoon they sellers are almost giving the last remaining items away. Each Sunday my wife and I have breakfast at a greasy spoon diner and then stop at an Estate Sale or two on the way home. We mainly just look but a pinball machine did follow me home once. What I do always buy are all the cookbooks they have. Most of the books are easily forgotten but occasionally you find gems like a 1943 and 1964 editions of the Joy of Cooking for $5.00 total. As an interesting side note the 1943 edition has recipes for rabbits, hare and squirrel, but the book does not explain how to dress the animals. The 1953 and 1964 editions both describe and show images of how to dress the animals. Apparently the latest edition (2006) does not have the squirrel skinning images (I thought I had a 2006 copy but I can't find it).
On this mornings adventure I picked up six books for $3.00, seven if you count
Joys of Jell-O stuck between the pages of
Introducing the Touchmatic Cooking with the Amana Radarange Microwave Oven (1979) (oven cost $513.45 on 19 Jan 1980 - invoice still in the book). Reading through
Diet Watchers Cookbook I found an interesting passage on Synsepalum dulcificum or the
Miracle Fruit, not bad for a 1978 book. It just shows that #FlavorTrip ping
restaurants are not always modern.
