NOLA

Going to New Orleans in two weekends (will probably miss the Super Bowl, booooo) and would like some recommendations. Already have dinner reservations at Bayona and Coquette, so I'm looking more for suggestions on lunch appropriate places, or places to just pop in for a quick bite. Bars are acceptable, too.

-I would suggest Parkway Bakery & Tavern, on Bayou St. John for Po' Boys at lunchtime. A short ride from the Central Business District by cab. I recommend any of the seafood Po' Boys. People rave about the roast beef Po' Boy but I don't really care for it, (well done and the dryness hidden by gravy).

-If you do go to Commander's Palace, see if you can get the Chef's Kitchen table reserved - that's a real experience!

-If you go drinking, be sure to try a Sazerac Cocktail

-Port O' Call on Esplanade Ave for the best hamburger you will have anywhere in the South

There's a Cajun place at the Original Farmers Market here in Los Angeles that I used to go to religiously. Used to live in the neighborhood, and once a week I'd walk there and get the new issue of Autosport and then sit down and read it with a fried oyster po'boy. Totally agree wtih you irt the roast beef, which I ordinarily quite like.

Sylvain is quite nice. EAT NOLA does a pretty good brunch/lunch. Love love love Cochon Butcher.

Yeah, we just watched the NOLA episode of 'The Layover' last night. Cochon Butcher might have to make an appearance on the itinerary.

Awesome, thanks! We were supposed to go to Willie Mae's and Cochon the last time we were in NOLA, but our trip got cut short by a day (the night before our flight, my wife tripped over her suitcase and did a face plant, chipping a tooth on the floor), and those were the two places we cut out.

I've heard of most of those places, but not Cassamento's. Where is it?

(FYI, we're staying at the Saint Hotel on Canal between Dauphine and Burgundy.)

Okay, so the weekend kinda ended up being free form. Turns out, Saturday was the Krewe du Vieux parade, which I guess is sort of a kickoff to Carnival/Mardi Gras. Whatever, it was a total hoot...... definitely not kid-friendly (there was an impressive variety of papier-mâché sodomy vignettes), but it was an absolute blast. Would do again, 10/10.

Our friends were staying at the Roosevelt, so we started off the weekend at Sazerac. Festivities included Bayona, Felix's, Royal House, Bourbon House (my first taste of Pappy Van Winkle, woot!), a place called Coop's which had the most amazing jambalaya (and really good fried chicken, too), and then a variety of drinking establishments about which I have little memory. (It was a fun trip.....)

We canceled reservations at Coquette to make sure we were in place for the parade, which was a mistake; the parade was over 90 minutes late getting through the Quarter, so we totally could have stuck to that plan. Oh well.
