What is a food city that people don’t appreciate yet? What should we eat there?

Well I live in Boise ID and there is a desperate need for some original restaurants here. We seem to be stuck in a chain food rut and when ever new creative and exciting restaurants open here they don't seem to last. The one I am most excited to try is a place called
State and Lemp
.

We moved to Richmond, VA in June and I have to say it's really booming here with the food scene. A writer for saveur recently said it was going to be the next city to blow up for food like Charleston.
There is a nice mix of the old and new here and since we're southern it fits the current trends nicely. There is also a sizeable ethnic population so the people are open to new flavors and the city is so close knit that there are always events going on that are food centric.
My favorites right now are heritage, magpie, comfort, Rappahannock, Peter Chang's. There are a bunch that I have yet to try but the list grows every month.

Cleveland. Nobody believes me but it's becoming one of the top foodie cities in the country. Top chefs:
Michael Symon. (Lola or B-spot). Zack Bruell (L'albatros, Parralax). Dante Bocuzzi (Dante, Ginko). Jonathan Sawyer (Greenhouse Tavern). And Velvet Tango Room and Porco for classic and tiki cocktails respectively.

Providence Rhode Island. Its home to tons of places to eat. From high class to a quick bite to eat on your lunch break from work. People usually think of Boston for when it comes to food and New England, however after living and going to school here, Providence has some of the best seafood and restaurants around.

Pittsburgh, PA is way more than the Primanti Bros sandwich. From the amazing food centric Strip District to the amazing Taiwanese and Northern Chinese enclaves in Squirrel Hill to the innovative, yet true to Pittsburgh's blue-collar spirit, downtown joint (Meat & Potatoes), Pittsburgh is one of if not the most underrated food city in America. Cure, Eleven, Oriental Kitchen, Pamela's - Pittsburgh's got a healthy mix of ethnic, lowbrow, middle and fine dining to qualify it as a good food city.

Orlando/Winter Park! We have Brandon McGlamery's restaurants, Prato and Luma; James & Julie Petrakis' The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder. James Beard Award-winning The Rusty Spoon. Txokos at the East End Market. Hawkers in the Mills Park area, and K in College Park. All very far away from the resorts and amusement parks, although there are very good places to eat in the tourist areas, too.

I'm also a huge fan of Peter Chang's. I don't live in Virginia, but I often make the 3 hour trip and I stop at PC's every time. Peppered beef makes you cough before you eat it, but its delicious.

Dry fried eggplant is unreal. I always ask for their cold appetizer menu too, it's always full of great regional sichuan dishes that you can't find anywhere else.

Everywhere. Most cities are pretty amazing.
I couldn't not say Montreal though, highest general standard of anywhere I have ever been to.

Not Columbus. It has a few OK places, but still a fast food city.

Montreal. because 1. duck fat everywhere, and 2. Tri Du, the chef of the most amazing "new style" sushi I have ever had. I have traveled internationally for a single meal of his (once in my life, but still).

I feel like Washington D.C. has a high concentration of really good restaurants, but I don't think it's necessarily on anyone's radar as a food city or destination.

They are just so obscenely over priced downtown....

Denver. it's had great food for awhile but the food scene is exploding there now. Fruition, Acorn, Squeeky Bean, Mercantile. The list goes on!
Brendan_Lee_56950
Yes and no. I think there have been a handful of very high end restaurants for a long time but there are also so many wannabes that just slap big price tags on poor dishes because they know people will come no matter what. More recently I've seen it transform towards a true restaurant town with places like rose's luxury popping up but that's a very recent trend. The other problem is that DC proper is a real pain in the ass to get to most of the day due to traffic.

Rather, a displaced Pitt alumni who actually decided to explore the city outside of Oakland during his time at school.

Philadelphia - Any and all of the Cook n' Solo Restaurants: Zahav, Dizengoff, Federal Doughnuts.
Also, the soft pretzels at Miller's Twist in Reading Terminal are ridiculous.
I would definitely echo Montreal, but I don't know if that one is unappreciated.
