Liquid Nitrogen Tank

So I was speaking to a company today to purchase liq nitrogen. They do not rent the tanks and the initial purchase of the dewar would be around $500. A lot for me to spend.

Is there a low budget way to hold the nitrogen for a month or so?

The dewars I have seen online go for around $375+ and they are about 5L i think.

Something like this says it should hold for 23 days or so.

As far as I know, no reputable company will sell LN2 without it being in an approved container i.e. a dewar.

The company I spoke with said they would put it is a thermos, but it wouldnt last long.

Shop ebay! If its for home use, you can get really good deals on 5-10L dewars for anywhere between $100 and $300

If you use a thermos make sure it is vented, NEVER store in a normal thermos. If it can't vent it WILL explode. Do an online search to see what happens when LN2 is not stored or transported correctly. Read the Cooking Issues Liquid Nitrogen Primer TWICE before buying LN2.

You can find used dewars on sites like lab x, bio surplus, or e bay. A 10 L dewar should hold for about 2 to 3days without opening it much if it is not damaged. If there is a University near by there is usually a source of LN2 in town. Airgas is one that is used quit often and they have food grade LN2.

If you are on a budget the a thick styrofoam container with a small opening will hold but it needs to be well insulated. The more volume you have them more it will hold. The container needs to be thick, 3-5 inches. Also the top needs to be thick as well with a deep neck 5 inches because that is where you loose most of the energy is interacting with the local environment. If you need want to do some research on this subject I would look at cryo dewars to get an idea for a design by looking at cryogenic dewars for cell storage. But with those you need to top off every week.

If you want a longer storage one can get a 180 L tank from Airgas. I'm not sure how much it will run you and I am not sure there is any special permitting for of those as well?

Having spent most of my life on a dairy farm, I worked with LN2 dewars all the time.

As has been already said, it is extremely important to be aware of all safety issues involved.
